A friend who often vacations there once said that not every film is dubbed like it is here, and that you therefore need English more often anyway!

I can tell you that this is definitely true in the Netherlands. I have two cousins who grew up there and they are much more used to watching shows in English compared to many people in Germany.

That's why I prefer listening and speaking, because I often prefer watching films and series in the original. But that's because the German dubbing voices are often terrible, or it's annoying when everything is Germanized. This was especially extreme with Game of Thrones, which was really bad in German.

Interesting, I often have the same feeling with German stories. Is that perhaps simply because English terms often sound better? For example, fuck, cunt, hoe, bitch, ass, tits, rape... all of them sometimes sound a bit less pleasant in German. What I feel is more of a problem with English is that the vocabulary isn't as extensive. In German, you find more alternative words; in English, you don't know every word, but there's also the translator or AI.

This might be just my personal impression, but using a different language offers me an additional layer of insulation, from the sordidness of the topic. I don’t think that cunt is actually a nicer word than the german equivalent starting with an F. I use it, with caution, as a lot of my female readers over the years told me it’s destroying their enjoyment of the story. So I use it deliberately, typically in direct speech to be hurtful and demeaning, but use other words referring to the same orifice if I can.
But that puts up the question what to use, vagina or vulva sounds so clinical. Pussy is always great but sounds a bit playful. There are of course the set of derogatory terms, such as cunt, snatch or fuck hole, they have their place but require some practice. Again, somebody speaking English natively, might be similar put of by my using those words, as I’m of those cheap german stories.

So a lot of words and still no clear answer.

The thing with the terms might just be that I prefer the English words. But you're right, I've always found the German word with an "F" a bit of a turn-off, even in roleplay, and there are hardly any decent words for anal.

I feel you. I started watching anime in Japanese when I was a teenager. I do that to this day. I think German dubs have gotten better, but back then it was truly terrible for most anime.

I would say that I personally strongly dislike using swedish dubbed or subtitled things, and if I can I want to read the books or hear them in their authors language if it is one I understand.

Swedish diplomats and many people here also pride themselves in speaking english well for it being only our second language, though most people can tell a swede is talking from some peculiarities in our dialect

Same with almost anybody speaking english as second language, I can pick out a german usually within 2 sentences. And almost 2 decades in the states have not eroded my own accent in the slightest.

I'm glad to hear that. Are my stories better in German than in English? I'd be interested to know, since I feel more comfortable writing in German myself. The last few weeks here have really helped me practice my English writing.

@LaLia Your situation sounds like mine, except French is my first language. So this site suits you perfectly. Nobody sees the amount of researching and proof-checking I do backstage to fine-tune my use of words. Just take "ass". Since this female body part has some great significance to me in erotica, I learned a good deal of synonyms. I will often use "butt", "bum" or "buns", but sometimes, I'll also use "derriere" usually when the context is a bit more glamorous and the rape scene has clear outré undertones!

I've been doing this a lot in my stories without knowing it -- Those soldiers are really eager to dip their cocks so they ain't going to trouble themselves with stripping more than the drop-trousers minimum! I can readily see how much it intensifies a girl's sense of shame and humiliation.

As for my English, I grew up in a bilingual town north of Montréal, been in an English-speaking boy-scout troop at 12, dated a Greek girl who didn't speak much French and I've been a pro translator from English to French for a good 20 years, and even then it took me at least two years of story writing to become skilled enough in written English not to make a fool of myself. Whenever I pick one of my old stories, I shudder and end up rewriting the whole goddamn thing!

About my German... Back in 1986 when I was 14, I skipped school one day in fall and took the bus to Montreal, where I perused bookstores in search of a good book to teach myself Latin, and that's were I stumbled into a book to learn German that was sitting alongside the one I was after. I ended up buying both, and then I took a really long walk back to the bus station all the way north of Montreal because I only had money left for the bus back home -- when I got home late, I made up a story and said I had met a really nice girl and we got talking, etc. My story was believable and that's how Latin and German became my third and fourth languages.
