Yes,It's better to burn out than to fade away - Final Climax

Post by Blue »

Teaser:
Panic seized him. A panic unlike anything he had ever experienced before. It paralyzed him, constricted his throat. The knife he had been holding only moments earlier slipped from his fingers. The room began to spin around him. His eyes tried to cling to Claire’s body, but in vain.
No. Not yet.
I don’t want to die.
I still have time.
I still have to …

Chapter 1
The Breakdown

The car began to jerk just as Claire Bennett had come out of a long, sweeping bend.
She took her foot off the accelerator and glanced at the dashboard. Nothing unusual. No warning light, no abnormally high temperature.
“Not now,” she muttered.

The engine recovered. For perhaps twenty seconds, everything ran normally. Then the car began to stutter again.

Claire switched on the hazard lights and slowly let the car roll onto the shoulder.
She looked in the rearview mirror.
No one.

The road to Red Creek was barely used at this time of day. Low pines and juniper bushes lined both sides, with dry grazing land stretching beyond them toward the first foothills of the Bighorn Mountains.

Her house was still almost five miles away.

Claire switched off the engine and tried to start it again.

The starter turned, but the engine would not catch.

“Damn it.”

She tried a second time.

Nothing.
Claire reached for her phone. One bar appeared on the display, disappeared again, and finally returned.
She opened her contacts. Who could she call?

Her best friend lived almost forty minutes away. Calling a tow truck would probably take forever.

She got out and opened the hood. There was little she could do beyond looking. She had never known much about cars.
After a few minutes, she gave up. Then she heard an engine behind her.
Claire turned around.

A dark SUV was approaching slowly and came to a stop a few yards behind her car.
The driver got out.

A man. He was tall—considerably taller than she was. She guessed he was in his mid-forties. Thick dark hair, well-kept clothes, and a calm, reassuring manner that made him seem anything but threatening.

He initially remained beside his vehicle.
“Trouble?”

Claire nodded.
“Unfortunately.”

He took a few steps toward her.
“Won’t it start?”

“No.”

“Mind if I take a look?”

Claire hesitated for only a moment. She was alone on a sparsely traveled road. Even so, the man did not seem threatening. Quite the opposite.
“If you know what you’re doing?”

He smiled.
“A little.”
He opened the hood and leaned over the engine compartment.

Claire remained beside him.

“By the way, I’m Daniel.”

It took her a moment to realize that he had just introduced himself.

“Claire.”

“Nice to meet you, Claire.”

He said it as naturally as if they had known each other for some time.
After a brief inspection, he straightened up.
“Could I sit in your car for a moment? And have the keys?”

Claire followed his request and watched as he turned the ignition key. Then he turned it back, removed the key, and handed it to her.
“I think I’ve figured out the problem.”

“What is it?” Claire asked anxiously.

The man looked at her with an amused smile.
“You’ve simply run out of gas.”

Claire stared at him.

Daniel walked over to the fuel flap and opened it.
“When did you last fill up?”

Claire thought for a moment.
“A few days ago. There should still be gas in the tank.”

Daniel replied, “The fuel gauge says otherwise. But I can help you.”
He walked back to his SUV and opened the trunk.

Claire spotted a black plastic fuel can.
“You don’t happen to have gasoline with you?”

“Actually, I do.”

She laughed.
“That’s almost creepy.”

“I drive long distances fairly often. Sometimes it pays to have some fuel with you.”
He placed the can beside her car.
“We’ll give it a try.”

Claire stepped aside.

While Daniel poured the gasoline into the tank, she looked at him more closely.
He was tall, slim, attractive.
The thought came unexpectedly and made her almost uncomfortable.
Until now, she had mainly seen him as the man who could help her. Now she noticed that his eyes were an unusually vivid blue.
She quickly looked away.

A short while later, Daniel had emptied the contents of the can into her tank.
“Try it now.”

Claire got behind the wheel and turned the key.
The engine started immediately.
Claire breathed a sigh of relief.
“Incredible.”

Daniel closed the hood.
“If I were you, I’d still have the car checked tomorrow, just to be safe.”

Claire got out again.
“I will. Thank you. Really.”

“No problem.”

She smiled.
“You’ve probably just saved me a very long evening.”

“Then stopping was worth it.”
He said it casually.

Claire noticed that she was smiling again.

Daniel glanced at her car.
“Do you live far from here?”

“Just under five miles.”

“That should be more than enough gas. But if you want, I can follow you, just to be safe.”

Claire looked at him.
“That really isn’t necessary.”

“I know.”
He gestured toward her car.
“But if it breaks down again, it’s better if someone is nearby.”

She considered it briefly.
Then she nodded.
“All right.”

“Then just drive on. I’ll follow you.”

Claire got back into her car. A few seconds later, she saw Daniel climb into his SUV in the rearview mirror.
She drove off.
The car ran perfectly.
What she had not noticed was the dark, damp patch forming beneath it.

A short while later, the headlights of the SUV appeared behind her in the rearview mirror.
Claire leaned back. The tension slowly faded.
What luck, she thought. Of all days.
And of all men.

She had no idea why the thought brought a small smile to her face.
She turned her attention back to the road.
The dark SUV followed at a discreet distance.

Chapter 2
At the Gas Station

Two days later, Claire had almost forgotten about the breakdown.

She had taken the car to a garage the following morning. The mechanic had quickly found a leak in the fuel line, but Claire had nevertheless insisted that the entire car be thoroughly checked. She did not want to end up stranded on an empty road again.

Late that afternoon, she drove back into town in the replacement car the garage had provided. On the way, she noticed that its fuel gauge was already showing empty.
Time to fill up.

The sun was already low, and warm light lay across the façades of the few shops along Main Street. Red Creek was quiet at this time of day. Most people were already on their way home when Claire pulled into the gas station in the small town.
As she switched off the engine, she reached for her handbag and got out.
Then she saw him.

At first, she recognized only the dark SUV.
She stopped for a moment.
The man standing at the pump opposite hers turned around.

He saw her too.
A brief smile appeared on his face.

Claire smiled back.

“You!”

He walked a few steps toward her.
“Claire.”

The fact that he remembered her name surprised her slightly.
“Daniel, right?”

“Right.”

She laughed.

“I didn’t expect to see you again so soon.”

“Neither did I.”

His eyes briefly moved toward her car.
“How’s the car?”

“It’s still alive.”

“That doesn’t sound particularly convincing.”

“The mechanic said it was just a problem with the fuel line. Nothing serious. But I’m having the whole car checked over, just to be safe.”

Daniel smiled.
“I can understand that.”

For a moment they simply stood there without either of them saying anything.

Claire noticed that she saw him differently today than she had during their first encounter.
Back then, she had been nervous. Her car had broken down, her phone had barely had any reception, and all she had been thinking about was getting home somehow.
Now she had time.
She noticed his dark hair, almost black in the evening light. His blue eyes caught her attention again.
And his height.

He was an attractive man.
The thought came so unexpectedly that she almost pushed it away again.
After all, she wasn't a twenty-year-old teenager.
But why not?
She was forty-two, divorced, and had been alone for a long time. She knew she was still attractive. She had simply stopped thinking about whether other people noticed that too.

“Everything all right?” Daniel asked.

Claire blinked.
“Yes. I was just thinking.”

“Then I won’t keep you.”
He took a small step back.

Claire realized she didn't want him to leave yet.
“You're not bothering me.”

He looked at her.

“Do you have time for a coffee? I'd like to invite you, as a thank-you for your help.” Claire gestured toward the little café beside the gas station.
“Over there?”

“Why not?”

They both paid and moved their cars to the parking lot in front of the café.

Inside, the place was almost empty. They sat at a table by the window with a good view outside.

“So,” Claire said after receiving her coffee. “Tell me something that has nothing to do with car trouble.”

Daniel laughed.
“That’s a pretty difficult condition.”

“Then you’ll just have to make an effort.”

The conversation quickly became easy and relaxed.
They talked about Red Creek, the surrounding area, and how long they had each lived there. Like Claire, he liked the quiet and the landscape. He revealed little about himself, but enough to keep Claire interested.

Apparently, he worked for a company outside town and traveled frequently for business. That was probably why Claire had never noticed him before.
In return, he asked her questions about her life, her work, her weekends, and her friends. She answered without giving it a second thought.
She told him about her little house outside town, the long drives into town, and how much she actually liked the peace and quiet.

“So you live pretty far out,” Daniel said.
Almost without noticing, he had switched from formal to informal.

Claire nodded.
“Yes. That was one of the reasons I bought the house.”

“All by yourself?”

She didn't notice the brief pause before he asked the question.
“Yes.”

“That must be nice.”

“Most of the time.”
She smiled.
“Sometimes it's pretty lonely out there, though.”

Daniel looked at her for a moment longer.
“I can imagine.”

Claire took a sip of coffee.
She didn't quite know why she had told him about her house.
Normally, she was more careful.
Maybe because he had helped her.
Maybe because she liked him.
Or maybe because she felt surprisingly comfortable around him.
That hadn't happened in a long time.

They changed the subject.
Claire told him about a little bookstore in town that she occasionally visited. Daniel asked what kind of books she liked.
At some point she realized that she was telling him more and more. And then Claire became aware that she had heard surprisingly little about him.
“Now you know quite a lot about me,” she said.

Daniel smiled.
“Then I suppose it's time I evened things out.”

Claire raised an eyebrow.
“Fair enough.”

He told her a small, unimportant story from his working life.

She laughed.

When they left the café a little later, it was already getting dark.
They stopped beside their cars.

“I enjoyed the coffee,” Claire said.

“So did I.”

He looked at her.
“Maybe we should do this again sometime.”

Claire gave him a mysterious smile.
“Maybe?”

She got into her car.
When she started the engine, she saw Daniel still standing beside his SUV in the rearview mirror.
She waved briefly.

He raised a hand.

Then she drove home.
On the way, she kept thinking about him.
Not about the breakdown. Not even about their conversation. But about that one moment when he had looked at her in the café.
She couldn't explain why that look was still on her mind. And for the first time in a long time, she wondered what it would feel like if a man truly desired her again.
The thought frightened her a little. But she liked it too.

Chapter 3
Dinner

Two days after their meeting at the café, Claire had hardly thought about Daniel.
At least, that was what she told herself.

Her everyday life had caught up with her again. She was on vacation at the moment, but there were groceries to buy and a few things around the house she had been putting off for weeks. And yet, every now and then, she found herself smiling without meaning to when she thought about the moments with Daniel in the café.
Especially his look.

Late that afternoon, she was sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee when her smartphone vibrated.
She looked at the screen.

Daniel Mercer.

For a moment she simply stared at his name in surprise. Then she remembered that they had exchanged phone numbers at the café.
She opened the message.

“Hi Claire. I was thinking about our conversation the other day. If you'd like, perhaps we could continue that coffee over dinner. I know a little Italian restaurant in Red Creek that is supposed to be really good. Maybe Friday?”

Claire read the message twice.
She was surprised. Not unpleasantly surprised. Quite the opposite.
A warm feeling spread through her, and she smiled.

She put down her cup and read the message again. Could she really just go out to dinner with him?
Why not?
It was only a dinner.

She typed:
“Friday works for me. What’s the name of the restaurant?”

The answer came a short while later.
“La Terrazza. I’d be happy to pick you up, if you’d like.”

Claire paused.
She knew the restaurant. She had driven past it several times but had never been there.
The idea of Daniel picking her up appealed to her. On the other hand, she hadn't known him for very long.

She wrote:
“That’s nice of you. But I can drive myself.”

His answer came almost immediately.
“Of course you can. I just thought it might be more pleasant if you didn’t have to worry about anything.”

Claire smiled. That sounded reasonable. And somehow charming.

After a brief hesitation, she wrote:
“Okay. Then I’ll let you surprise me. Six o’clock?”

Daniel confirmed the time.

She put the phone down.
Only then did she realize how much she was looking forward to his invitation.
More than she had expected.
--------------------------------
Late Friday afternoon, Claire stood in front of her wardrobe for a long time.
She wasn't sure why.
After all, it was only an ordinary dinner. Not a gala.
She took out a pair of dark jeans and laid them on the bed.
Too ordinary.
Then she pulled a pair of black trousers from the closet.
Too formal.
Finally, her eyes settled on a dark blue blouse.
She held it up.
Better.
She wanted to look good, but not as though she had spent hours preparing for the evening.
Claire laughed at herself.
Since when did she think so much about what to wear to dinner?

She finally chose a simple, elegant outfit: dark trousers, the blouse, and shoes slightly dressier than those she normally wore.
She tried everything on.
Then she stood in front of the mirror.

Her long, dark-brown hair fell loosely over her shoulders.
At forty-two, she was no longer young. But she wasn't old either. And she knew she still had a good figure. She exercised regularly, after all. Perhaps she simply hadn't consciously noticed for a long time that her body was still slim and athletic.

Claire turned slightly to the side.
“Well, there.”

She smiled.
Then she opened the drawer in the dresser in her bedroom—the drawer where she kept her underwear.

Her hand moved over the different pieces. She wasn't entirely sure what she was looking for.
Finally, she chose something she hadn't worn in a long time: dark, lace-trimmed panties and a matching bra.
She held them for a moment.

It was ridiculous. Daniel would probably never even see them. But perhaps that was precisely the point.
She put them on and looked at herself in the mirror again.

A nervous but pleasant tingling spread through her stomach. Not strong. But unmistakable.
She had almost forgotten that feeling—the anticipation of being desirable to a man.

Claire picked up her lipstick and applied it.
Then she stopped.
She smiled.
“It’s only a dinner.”
But this time, she didn't quite believe herself.
………………………………
Daniel was already dressed when he checked the time.
Just under twenty minutes.

He took his jacket from the chair and passed the mirror once more.
He had chosen jeans, a dark jacket, and a light-colored shirt. Not too elegant. Not too casual. Just right for the occasion.
He thought about Claire. Her smile. The way she had looked at him in the café. And her message.

She hadn't hesitated for long.
He liked that.

There was no reason to rush anything.
Not yet.

Daniel picked up his smartphone.
A message had arrived.
He opened it, read it briefly, and put the phone down again.
Then he looked at the clock. Time was moving. But for now, it was still on his side.
He took his keys and left the house.
----------------------------------------------
Claire heard the car pull up on the gravel drive outside her house.

She picked up her handbag and checked her reflection one last time. Then she opened the door.

Daniel stepped out of his SUV and walked toward her. For a moment, he said nothing. His eyes simply remained on her.

Claire felt her face grow warm.

“You look good.”

“Thank you.”
She smiled.
“So do you.”

“Then I guess we both got it right.”

They laughed.
Claire closed the door behind her and walked with him toward his car.

During the drive, they talked about unimportant things. Claire noticed how quickly she relaxed around him.
It didn't feel like a first date. And yet, that was probably exactly what it was.

La Terrazza stood slightly away from Main Street and was smaller than Claire had expected.
Warm, subdued light fell across the pale wooden tables. Old photographs of Italian landscapes hung on the walls. Soft music came from somewhere in the background, and the smell of garlic, herbs, and freshly baked bread drifted out from the kitchen.

Daniel had reserved a table in a quieter corner.
“Do you like it?”
Claire looked around.
“I do. That’s a very nice place!”

The food was excellent. Daniel had chosen a variety of dishes for them to share, all of which tasted wonderful.

Their conversation between courses was deeper this time than it had been at the café. Claire told him more about her divorce. Not everything, but enough for him to understand why she had left her husband.

She also talked about how she had learned to live alone and how she sometimes considered moving back into town.

Daniel listened attentively. And he asked questions that Claire interpreted as genuine interest in her. She didn't notice how skillfully he guided the conversation. She was too busy enjoying his company.

After dinner, they remained at the table over another glass of wine.

Claire looked at him.
“You’re difficult to figure out.”

Daniel smiled.
“Is that good or bad?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Then I suppose we’ll have to get to know each other a little better.”

Claire felt the familiar warmth in her stomach again.
By now she knew that she found him attractive. Very attractive. And for the first time in a long time, she wasn't merely imagining what it might be like to have a man in her life again.
She was wondering what it would be like if that man came closer to her.
The thought made her nervous.
But she liked it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
When they left the restaurant, it was already dark.
Daniel held the door open for her and walked with her to the car.

During the drive back, neither of them said much. But the silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was more like the silence of two people who both knew that something between them had changed.

When they finally stopped outside Claire's house, Daniel switched off the engine.

Claire looked through the windshield at her house.
Suddenly, she didn't want the evening to end.

She got out.

Daniel followed.

They stood beside the car.

Claire held her handbag awkwardly in front of her, searching for words.
“So…”

Daniel smiled.
“So.”

They both laughed softly.

Then silence returned.

Daniel took a small step toward her.
Claire looked at him.

He came a little closer.

She could have stepped back. But she didn't.

His lips touched hers.

The kiss was gentle and brief. Then Daniel lightly put his arms around her and drew her a little closer.

Claire felt his warmth. For a moment, there was nothing but that closeness. She had almost forgotten what it felt like.

Then Daniel slowly pulled away.

His lips were close to her ear.
“Will I see you again?”

Claire couldn't find the words at first. She simply nodded.

He smiled and let her go.
“Good night, Claire.”

“Good night, Daniel.”

He got into his car.

Claire remained where she was, watching until the red taillights disappeared down the dark road.
Then she touched her lips with her fingertips.
She smiled.
It was an unfamiliar feeling. She felt light. Younger than she had in a long time. And at the same time, there was that pleasant sensation in her stomach that she didn't want to lose.
Slowly, she turned and went inside.
She stopped once more in the hallway. And smiled again.
……………………………………………………….
Daniel watched in the rearview mirror until Claire's house disappeared behind the next bend.
She had allowed the kiss. More than that. She had kissed him back.
Not immediately. But eventually.

Daniel smiled. That was exactly what he had wanted to know.
He would give her time. Patience was important. Claire should believe that everything was developing naturally. That she herself was deciding how quickly things progressed.
He knew this part of the game. And he knew Claire had become curious. He had her where he wanted her. Or at least, he thought he did.
Daniel glanced at the clock. Then he drove on.

Chapter 4
At Claire’s House

Two days after dinner, Daniel sent Claire another message early in the evening.
“I was just thinking about your house. You described it as something really special. I’d like to see it for myself, not just from the outside.”

Claire read the message twice.
She had to smile. She wasn't quite sure why the thought of showing Daniel her house made her a little nervous. Perhaps because the house revealed more about her than she would normally tell someone during the first few weeks of getting to know them.
But Daniel was no longer a complete stranger to her.

She replied:
“If you're curious, you’re welcome to come and see it.”
A short while later, they agreed that he would come by the following evening.
-------------------------------------------
Daniel parked his SUV on the small driveway, where Claire was already waiting for him by the front door.

“Welcome,” she said.

“Thank you.”

He looked around briefly.
The house was even more secluded than he had imagined. Open land stretched out behind the property, broken only by scattered groups of trees. The nearest road was visible only as a narrow strip between them.

Claire noticed his gaze.

“Now you probably understand why I like living here.”

“Yes. I like it.”

He looked over the property again.
“You really have plenty of privacy here.”

Claire smiled.
“That was exactly what I was thinking when I bought the house.”

She led him inside.
The living room was bright and comfortably furnished. Nothing was overly luxurious, but everything looked neat and personal. Books stood on a shelf beside the fireplace. A few magazines lay on a small table, next to a photograph from a long time ago.

Daniel stopped for a moment.
“It feels very cozy.”

“Thank you.”
Claire led him farther inside.
She showed him the kitchen, which she particularly liked, and the small room she used as a study when she worked on her writing.
“I probably spend far too much time in here.”

Daniel smiled.
“It doesn't look that way.”

She told him how she had found the house after her divorce and why she had eventually decided to buy it.
It wasn't a large house. But it was hers.

That became clear to Daniel very quickly. Every room, every corner bore her personal touch. Even the air seemed to carry her scent.

Claire led him out onto the terrace.

The sun was already low on the horizon, but the air was still pleasantly warm.

Daniel looked around discreetly.
No neighboring houses. No illuminated windows nearby. No people. Only the open landscape and the road that disappeared between the trees some distance away.
“This really is secluded,” he said.

Claire leaned against the wooden railing.
“Sometimes maybe a little too secluded.”

“Have you never been afraid?”
She thought for a moment.
“No. Not really.”
Then she smiled.
“Nothing bad has ever happened around here. Not in Red Creek.”

Daniel looked at her. “That’s reassuring.”

Claire laughed.
But she didn't notice that he looked over the property once more.

Daniel took in the distance to the road, the driveway, the wide fields and meadows. There was no neighboring house anywhere in sight.
He memorized the surroundings carefully without letting anything show.

Claire was talking about a small garden behind the house now and how much she enjoyed sitting outside on the terrace during the summer.
Daniel listened. To her, it was simply a conversation about her home. To him, it was something else.

He wasn't merely looking at rooms. He was looking at a place. A place where Claire lived alone. A place where she felt safe— for now.

When he later in the evening said goodbye, they stood outside the front door for another moment.

Claire wanted to offer him again a glass of wine, but Daniel politely declined. It had been a long day at work, he said, and he wanted to go home so he would be rested for the next day. But he emphasized how much he liked her house. Very much indeed, he thought.

Claire accepted the compliment with a smile, although she was secretly a little disappointed that he had declined her offer.

Daniel said goodbye.
“Good night, Claire.”

He didn't kiss her. He didn't embrace her.

Instead, he merely touched her arm briefly. Deliberately.

“Good night, Daniel.”
She remained standing in the doorway, watching him until his car disappeared down the driveway. Then she closed the door behind her.

Daniel drove slowly back along the road. In the rearview mirror, the house grew smaller.
He had now seen how Claire lived. Her home. Her surroundings. The place where she felt safe.
He smiled almost imperceptibly.
For now, she was still convinced that this house belonged to her alone.

Chapter 5
The Next Step

Claire lay awake for a long time.
She should have been tired. It was late, and the evening had ended less excitingly than she had secretly hoped.
Perhaps that was precisely why she couldn't get Daniel out of her head.

She thought about his visit, their brief conversation on the terrace, and the way he had moved so naturally through her house.
And then she thought about the way they had said goodbye.

He hadn't kissed her. He hadn't put his arms around her.

Claire turned onto her side and pulled the blanket a little higher. Why did that disappoint her?

She had only known Daniel for a few days. And yet, when she had stood in front of the mirror that evening, she had hoped that he would find her attractive.

She remembered what she had worn for the occasion: the jeans. The white blouse.

She had deliberately left the top button undone. Nothing more. Just enough to make the neckline slightly more relaxed and allow the lace of her bra to show with certain movements.
She had caught herself briefly wondering in front of the mirror whether Daniel would notice. And of course he had noticed. She was sure of it.

And yet he had done nothing.

Perhaps that was exactly why she trusted him more and more.
He could have let the evening end differently.
He could have kissed her. And more. She would not have resisted. But instead, he had simply said goodbye.

Claire smiled faintly. Perhaps that was even better.
She didn't want a man who simply took what he wanted from her.
She wanted someone who could wait. Someone who allowed her to decide how far she wanted to go.
And suddenly she realized that this very restraint had given her something she hadn't felt with a man in a very long time:
Security.

She closed her eyes.
That pleasant tingling in her stomach was back.
Perhaps she had actually underestimated Daniel.
And perhaps she wanted to see him again sooner than she had been willing to admit.
-------------------
The next morning, Claire picked up her smartphone before she had even had her first coffee.
She opened her conversation with Daniel.
She typed:
“Good morning. I hope you got home safely last night. It was a short but lovely evening with you!”
She read the message again.
Was that too forward?
She deleted the last sentence.
Then she typed it again.
Finally, she pressed Send.

The reply took a while. And it was brief.
“Good morning, Claire. Yes, everything’s fine. I enjoyed the evening with you too!”

Claire smiled. At the same time, she was disappointed.
Daniel's message sounded almost a little terse.
She put down her coffee cup. Then she typed:
“Maybe next time we should do something where we don't just stand around on the terrace.”
Her finger hovered over the screen for a moment. Then she sent the message.
She immediately regretted it a little.
What had she been thinking? Her own behavior puzzled her.
She went to the kitchen window and looked outside. Red Creek lay quiet in the morning sun.

Her smartphone vibrated again. Claire picked it up expectantly.

“That sounds good. Do you have any suggestions?”
She smiled.

This time she didn't have to think long.
“I'll leave it up to you.”
---------------
Daniel read her message twice.
He was sitting in his car, his smartphone mounted on the dashboard of his SUV so that he could easily make calls or read incoming messages.
Claire had taken the next step on her own.
Exactly what he had been waiting for.

He leaned back with satisfaction.
Claire believed she had made the decision herself. And perhaps she had.

Daniel thought about the evening at her house.
The white blouse. The single open button. Of course he had noticed.
But he had given nothing away.
Not yet.

He knew that Claire now believed she could read him correctly.
That she interpreted his restraint as a sign that she could trust him.

Daniel smiled.
That was perhaps the most important thing of all.

Then he typed his reply.
“I have an idea. I’ll pick you up around five.”
He sent the message without hesitation.
Because he already knew where he was going to take her.
And he also knew that Claire had no idea how long he had been waiting for exactly this moment.

Chapter 6
The Lake

As promised, Daniel picked Claire up in the late afternoon.

“I’ve thought of something different for today,” he said as she got into the car.

Claire looked at him questioningly.

“No restaurant. No café. No gas station.”

As he gave her a mischievous grin, he noticed from the corner of his eye that she was looking at him curiously.

He smiled. “I promise it won’t be boring.”

They drove out of Red Creek. The houses became fewer, the road narrower. Eventually, Daniel turned onto a little-used side road.
After a while, a small lake appeared between the trees.

Claire looked out the window.

“I had no idea there was a lake here. And I’ve lived here for so long!”

“Most people in Red Creek know about it. But very few come here.”

Daniel parked on a small clearing.
The surface of the lake lay still between the trees. The afternoon sun shimmered on the water. On their side of the lake there was a sandy stretch of shore; on the opposite bank, dense woodland began.

“Beautiful,” Claire said softly.

“I thought you might like it.”

They walked a little way along the shore. Daniel took a blanket and something to drink from the car and carried them over. In a suitable spot, he spread the blanket out and asked Claire to sit down. Then he sat beside her.

It was different from the café. Different from the restaurant. Quieter. More personal, Claire thought.

After Daniel opened a can of cold beer for each of them, they continued the conversations they had begun on their previous outings.
Claire told him about her childhood, about things she hadn't told anyone in a very long time. Daniel listened patiently and quietly, asking only an occasional question.

Later, Claire took off her shoes and stepped into the water.

She flinched.
“It’s cold!”

Daniel laughed.
“You wanted to find out whether it was worth it.”

“That’s not an answer.”
Nevertheless, she kept walking. Soon the water reached almost to her knees.
Claire stopped and looked back at him.

“Are you coming?”

Daniel shook his head with a laugh.
“I’d rather watch you!”

“Coward!” Claire called back as she splashed some water in his direction.

Daniel dodged, laughing.

She laughed too.
For a moment, she felt almost like a little girl again. Carefree. Untroubled.

Eventually, she waded back to shore, walked over to the blanket, and slowly, almost provocatively, took off her jeans and blouse. Beneath them she was wearing the same white underwear as before—and she left it on.
She glanced briefly at Daniel and noticed that she had his full attention.
Then she ran back into the water, still wearing only her white underwear.

The water was still cold, but after a few minutes she got used to it. She swam a little farther out and floated on her back. Then she noticed Daniel getting up from the blanket and watching her.

When Claire finally swam back and climbed out of the water, she was visibly shivering with cold. But Daniel was already standing there with a large towel, holding it out to her.

Claire took it and wrapped it around her shoulders.

“I should have warned you,” Daniel said.

“About what?”

“That the water isn't exactly tropical.”

Claire laughed.
“I could have figured that out myself.”
She rubbed her arms dry.

Daniel looked at her.
“You should dry yourself properly under the towel too. Otherwise you’ll catch a chill.”

Claire looked down at herself.
Her wet underwear was still clinging to her skin, and she knew he was right. Even so, the thought suddenly felt much more intimate than it should have.
She looked at Daniel, embarrassed.

“Would you turn around for a moment?”

“Of course.”

He turned away without hesitation.

Claire took off her wet underwear and eventually handed it to him over her shoulder.
“Here.”

Daniel took it without turning around.

“Thanks.”
Claire wrapped the towel more tightly around herself.
“Okay.”

Daniel turned back toward her.
For a brief moment, Claire was acutely aware of the situation.
She was standing in front of him, wrapped only in the large towel, holding it tightly across her chest with both hands.

Daniel gave no indication that anything was unusual.
He kept the towel open so that she could wrap herself completely in it.
Then he began carefully drying her wet hair and shoulders.
His movements were calm and matter-of-fact.
He made no attempt to sneak a curious glance beneath the towel. He made no suggestive remark.

That restraint made Claire even more aware of the situation.
She had allowed herself to be naked and vulnerable in front of a man, and he had given her no reason to regret it.

“Better?” he asked.

Claire nodded.
“Much better.”
She looked at him and smiled.
“You really are a gentleman.”

“I try to be.”
Claire believed him.

As Daniel continued drying her hair, she felt that pleasant tingling again.
She wasn't quite sure when their relationship had changed so much.
But she knew that she liked being close to him now.
Very much.
------------------------------------------------------
Later, Claire was sitting beside Daniel on the blanket again, having warmed herself up.
She had put her jeans and white blouse back on. The clothes felt strange against her still slightly cool skin. Her hair was still damp, but she didn't mind.

Daniel's shoulder moved closer and closer to hers until they were touching.
Claire didn't move away.
“You have no idea what you do to me when you sit there like that,” Daniel said, resuming the conversation that their swim had interrupted.

Claire looked at him.
“What am I like?”

He took his time answering.
“Relaxed.”

She smiled.
“That’s all?”

“No.”
His gaze remained on her.
“But perhaps that’s enough for today.”

Claire felt her face grow warm.
For the first time in a long while, she didn't feel that she had to look younger to be desired.
Daniel saw her exactly as she was.
Forty-two. With her long hair and her still firm figure.
And she enjoyed that feeling.

Claire placed her hand beside his. Their fingers touched.
She moved her hand slightly.
Their fingers intertwined.
Daniel glanced briefly at their hands, then back at her face.
Claire smiled at him. She felt light. And desired.

When they eventually walked back to the car, the sun was already sinking low.

Claire stopped once more and looked back across the lake.

“Thank you,” she said.

“For what?”

“For the lovely afternoon.”

Daniel smiled.
“My pleasure.”

They put the wet things in the trunk and got into Daniel’s car.

On the way back, Claire rested her head against the side window. She thought about how natural his presence had become to her.
And about how much she wanted to see him again.
Not someday.
Soon.
----------------
Daniel drove silently through the gathering darkness.
Claire looked out the window and didn't notice that he occasionally glanced over at her.
He thought back to the afternoon.
To her hand in his.
To her expression.
And to the moment when she had allowed herself to be so vulnerable with him.
When Claire had let him wrap her in the towel, he had discreetly looked her over.
He had allowed himself only a brief glance at her body. Then he had looked away and given nothing away.
Claire hadn't noticed.

To her, his restraint was another reason to trust him.
To Daniel, the afternoon was confirmation.
She had opened herself to him more than he had expected.
She was now seeking his company on her own.
And she trusted him.

Daniel turned his attention back to the road.
Claire was the right choice.
And so far, everything was going according to plan.

Chapter 7
Aftermath

Claire lay in bed and couldn't fall asleep.
The room was dark. A narrow strip of moonlight fell through the gap between the curtains onto the opposite wall.
She had had a long and exciting day. She was tired and should have been asleep already.
But her thoughts refused to settle.

Again and again, she returned to the afternoon at the lake.
To the cold water.
To Daniel's smile.
To his voice.
And above all, to the moment when she had come out of the water and he had handed her the towel.

Claire closed her eyes.
She could still feel his presence. She could still smell the subtle scent of his aftershave.

It wasn't even the touch itself that she remembered most vividly. It was the feeling of being seen as a woman again by a man.

“You have no idea how relaxed you are.”

She repeated the words silently to herself.
No one had said that to her in a very long time. And it was true.
Perhaps she herself had simply stopped thinking about it for far too long.

Claire turned onto her side. She imagined what it would be like if Daniel did more than simply hold her hand next time.
If he kissed her again. Longer than the first time.
The thought sent a pleasant tingling through her body.

She opened her eyes again. It was astonishing. She had believed that part of herself was long gone. But apparently it had merely been buried deep inside her for a very long time.
She thought about the years after her divorce. The many evenings alone. The years in which she had grown accustomed to having no one beside her.
She had repeatedly told herself that she hadn't missed anything. But perhaps she had simply forgotten what it felt like to miss someone.

Daniel was different.
Or at least, he seemed different.

Claire smiled into the darkness.
Perhaps she really was ready to let him come closer.

The thought made her nervous. But it was a pleasant kind of nervousness.
She closed her eyes.
This time, it didn't take long for her to fall asleep.
-------------
The next morning, Claire reached for her smartphone before she had even had her first coffee.
A message.
From Daniel.
She opened it.
“Good morning. I hope you didn't catch too much of a chill yesterday. 😉

Claire smiled immediately.
She typed:
“Good morning, my gentleman. A little, perhaps. But it was worth going to the lake!”

The reply came shortly afterward.
“I feel the same way.”

Claire lightly bit her lower lip.
Then she typed:
“And my hair still isn't completely dry.”
She looked at the message.
Was that too obvious an invitation?
Her finger hovered over the screen for a moment. Then she sent it.

Daniel's reply came almost immediately.
“Then I guess I’ll have to rub it even more next time!”

Claire laughed softly to herself.
“Perhaps you should.”
She paused. That had been much more flirtatious than she had originally intended.
But she didn't delete it.

A few seconds later, his reply appeared.
“I will.”

Claire placed the smartphone on her chest and stared at the ceiling.
Her heart was beating faster.
By now, she knew quite clearly that she wanted to see Daniel again.
And this time, she wasn't going to wait for him to make the next move.
“Are you doing anything tonight?”
She sent the message before she could change her mind.
------------------------
Daniel read it a few minutes later.
He smiled.
Claire had started looking for him herself.
Exactly what he wanted.

He deliberately waited a few minutes before typing his reply:
“Nothing that would be more important.”
Then he leaned back.

Claire believed by now that she herself was deciding how quickly their relationship was developing. And perhaps she was.

Daniel looked at the clock.
Then at the date.
He had time.
For now.
And he knew that Claire was willingly drawing closer to him.
That made everything easier.

Chapter 8
At Claire’s

Claire put her smartphone aside and remained sitting on her bed for a while.
She had just asked Daniel whether he had plans for the evening.
It had been bolder than she had intended. But now that the message had been sent, she felt surprisingly good.

She got up and went into the kitchen. As she did, she found herself thinking again about the previous afternoon.
The lake. The cold water. Daniel's hand as he had dried her hair. His voice when he had told her that he found her attractive.

She opened the refrigerator without really looking inside.

What would she cook for him? The thought came so naturally that she had to smile at herself.

Not another restaurant. Not another café.

Tonight she wanted Daniel with her. In her house. In her kitchen. At her table.

She wanted to cook something for him and watch to see whether he liked it.

She wanted to open a bottle of wine and sit with him at the kitchen table or on the terrace, without having to keep an eye on the time.
And perhaps drink a second bottle of wine with him.

Claire paused.
A second bottle was probably excessive. On the other hand...
She smiled mischievously at her own idea.

If they both had a little more wine, Daniel shouldn't drive home afterward.
That would be sensible.

She went into the hallway and opened the door to her small guest room.
The room was fully furnished. A bed, a wardrobe, a lamp, even fresh sheets. No one had ever used it, though.

Claire suddenly found herself amused by her own thoughts. Of course she wouldn't simply ask Daniel to stay the night. But she could offer. As though the thought had only just occurred to her: “I think we've had too much wine. You shouldn't drive home. If you'd like, you can sleep in the guest room.”
A perfectly reasonable suggestion.

And yet Claire knew that reason wasn't the only thing making the idea so appealing.

She imagined Daniel staying after dinner. The two of them perhaps sitting together on the sofa. His hand touching hers. His kissing her again. This time perhaps not just briefly at the front door.

Claire felt the familiar tingling in her stomach.
She sat down on the arm of the sofa.
It had been a long time since she had had thoughts like these. And even longer since she had looked forward to seeing a man again.
Suddenly, the idea of letting Daniel come closer no longer seemed so unreasonable. Perhaps she even wanted that.
Very much.

She thought back to the ugly months of her divorce.
To the years that followed.

At some point, she had stopped wondering whether a man would still find her desirable. Not out of bitterness. It had simply stopped being an issue.
Until Daniel came along.

And now she felt like a woman who had desires again. A woman who could miss someone. Who longed for touch. Who wanted to feel another person's skin.

Claire stood up. If Daniel really came to her that evening, she wanted to be prepared. But not too prepared. She didn't want to frighten him away.
So she picked up her smartphone again and typed:
“Would you like to come to my place for dinner tonight? The weather is nice enough to sit on the terrace. And I’d like to find out what you think of my cooking. What do you say?”
Claire read the message again.
For a moment she hesitated. Then she took a deep breath and pressed Send.

-------------------------------------------
Daniel had already checked his smartphone several times.
He was waiting expectantly for her next message.

It took surprisingly long, and he wondered whether he might have made an unintentional mistake and frightened her away.
Then her name finally appeared on the display.
Daniel read the message slowly. A barely perceptible smile crossed his face.
Exactly what he had hoped for.

He put the smartphone aside and leaned back.
For a moment, he closed his eyes.
Then he said quietly to himself:
“Now I have you exactly where I wanted you.”
For a moment he his eyes are closing…

Chapter 9
The Evening at Claire’s

Claire had caught herself looking at the clock with surprising frequency throughout the afternoon.
She wanted everything to be just right.

The food was as prepared as it could be, the table on the terrace was set, and two glasses stood there beside an unopened bottle of wine sitting in an ice bucket. A second bottle was waiting in the refrigerator.

When she finally stood in front of her wardrobe, the same uncertainty she had experienced before their previous meetings returned.

Only this time, it was different. This wasn't a meeting on neutral ground. Daniel was coming to her.
She didn't want to look as though she had planned the evening down to the last detail. But neither did she want to give the impression that she didn't care whom she was welcoming into her home.

After some thought, she decided on dark jeans and a white blouse. Once again, she left the top button undone. No more than last time.

She looked at herself in the mirror.
“This is perfectly fine.”
She smiled. Then she opened the drawer containing her underwear.

Her eyes moved over the various pieces.
A simple cotton set was immediately ruled out. Too ordinary.

She picked up another one, held it in her hand for a moment, and then put it back. Too conspicuous. In her eyes, it looked too much like an attempt to deliberately seduce Daniel.

Finally, her gaze settled on a black lace set.

Claire took it out. She hadn't worn it in a long time. Not because she didn't like it. Actually, she liked it very much. But for a long time, there had been no reason to want to feel especially beautiful in it.

She looked at it for a moment.

“Why not?”

She wanted to send Daniel a message with it. But not an open invitation. Above all, she wanted to look good for herself.
And yes, the longer she thought about it, the more she also wanted Daniel to find her attractive.
That thought brought back the now familiar tingling in her stomach.

Claire smiled. It had been a long time since she had wondered, while choosing her underwear, what a strange man might think of it. And in the end, she chose exactly that lingerie. Together with the dark jeans and white blouse.
A perfectly normal, loose-fitting outfit for a relaxed evening at home on the terrace.

And yet Claire knew that she had dressed differently tonight than she would have on an ordinary evening.

She stepped in front of the mirror once more.
Perhaps it wasn't Daniel she was taking such care to look good for. Perhaps the woman looking back at her from the mirror was the woman she herself had not seen inside herself for a very long time.
A woman who had desires again.
Who wanted to feel desired again.
Claire brushed a strand of hair away from her face and smiled at her reflection.
Tonight, she wanted to feel like that woman again—the woman she had last been a very, very long time ago.
Far too long ago, she suddenly realized.
-------------------------------------------
When Daniel arrived a little later, Claire was already standing on the terrace.

He had brought a bottle of wine and a large bouquet of beautiful roses as a gift.
“I thought I shouldn't come empty-handed.”

Claire blushed as she accepted both.
“That really wasn't necessary!” But Daniel merely waved it away as he briefly and discreetly looked around.

The garden behind the house was quiet. The rays of the evening sun fell across the terrace. There was no one in sight.

“This is beautiful.”

“Wait until you've tasted what I've cooked.”

They both laughed.

The evening began completely harmlessly.
They ate, talked, and drank wine while the candle in the lantern cast its warm light.
Claire soon noticed herself becoming more relaxed.

Perhaps it was the wine. Perhaps it was Daniel. Probably both.
She told him things she had held back until now. Daniel listened and occasionally asked questions that convinced her he was paying close attention. But she didn't notice how carefully he remembered her answers.
----------------------------------------------------
Later, they stood together shoulder to shoulder on the terrace, watching the sunset.
The second bottle of wine had been opened by then as well.

Claire leaned back against the railing and looked directly into Daniel's face.
“I don't think I've enjoyed an evening this much in a very long time.”

Daniel returned her gaze.
“Neither have I.”

For a moment, neither of them said anything.
Then Daniel stepped closer.

Claire didn't move away.
His hand touched her arm.
Very lightly.

Claire looked up at him.
The kiss came slowly. But this time it lasted longer than their first kiss at the end of their previous evening together.

Claire closed her eyes. She put her arms around him. The closeness felt both new and familiar at the same time.
She hadn't felt like this in a very long time.
Desired.
And safe.

When they briefly pulled apart, she smiled.
“I think I've missed you.”

Daniel said nothing.
He kissed her again.
Claire surrendered to the kiss.
For her, the moment was a small personal triumph.

She had wanted so badly for the evening to take such a turn. And perhaps even a little more.
She rested her head briefly against his shoulder.

Daniel gently stroked her back. He could feel Claire moving closer to him entirely of her own accord. And that was what mattered to him.
Claire was supposed to believe that she had made a decision tonight. And in a way, she had.
But she didn't know how many decisions had already been made before her. Not by her.

He thought about the past few weeks.
His observations.
The breakdown on the country road.
The carefully planned reunion at the gas station.
The first extended conversation with her at the café.
The dinner at the restaurant.
And finally, the afternoon at the secluded lake.
Each step had brought Claire a little closer to him without arousing her suspicion.
And now she was standing here, leaning against his chest.
In her own home. In his arms.
--------------------------------------------
Daniel's thoughts drifted for a moment to his own marriage.
At the beginning, they had been a good couple—at least on the outside. Inside, things had looked different even then. His wife experienced sexuality completely differently from him. When he had eventually told her about his own desires, she had reacted with disgust and turned away from him where sex was concerned.
After that, a distance had also developed in their everyday life, growing greater with the passing years. They simply lived alongside one another. Conversations had become routines. Touches had become rare exceptions.
At some point, Daniel had stopped hoping for things to change. But his desires had remained. Desires Claire knew nothing about.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Claire, meanwhile, was lost in thoughts of her own.
That evening, she had done something more important to her than any kiss.
She had invited him into her home.
She had allowed him into her private world.
And she had begun seeking his closeness herself.

Daniel looked at Claire.
He knew he had to remain patient. Nothing could go wrong now.
--------------------------------------------
Eventually, Claire pulled away from him.
“You're staying a little longer, aren't you?”

Daniel smiled.
“If you want me to.”

“Of course I do.”
She said it spontaneously.

He noticed that she blushed slightly.

Claire looked at the clock.
Then at the almost empty wine bottle.
“You probably shouldn't drive home tonight.”

Daniel remained silent.

Claire gestured toward the hallway.
“The guest room is ready. If you'd like, you can sleep here.”
She said it as casually as possible.
But they both knew that her offer was not entirely selfless.

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”
She smiled.

“It would be foolish for you to drive home after two bottles of wine.”

Daniel returned her smile.
“Then I'll gladly accept your offer.”

Claire felt that tingling again.
She didn't know what the rest of the evening would bring.
But for the first time, she hoped that it was far from over.

And Daniel knew something else.
Tonight, he would sleep in Claire's house.
Exactly where he wanted to be.
Claire still believed that she had opened this door to him of her own free will.
And that was precisely what would make his next step so easy.
-----------------------------------------------
They stopped outside the guest room.
For a moment, neither of them said anything.
The hallway was quiet.
Only the soft hum of the air conditioner could be heard.

Claire looked at Daniel. Suddenly, she no longer knew what she had expected.
What she should say to him.
Only a few minutes earlier, she had casually offered him a place to stay.
Now that he was actually standing in front of the guest room, the step suddenly felt much bigger.

“Well... good night,” Daniel finally said.

Claire nodded.
“Good night.”

He opened the door.
“Thank you again,” he said. “For the lovely evening.”

“I had a lovely evening too.”

Their eyes met again.
Then Daniel went into the guest room and closed the door behind him.

Claire remained in the hallway for another moment before slowly withdrawing to her own bedroom, slightly disappointed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
She closed the door behind her and leaned against it.
What had she actually expected? That he would pick her up in his strong arms and carry her into her bedroom?

Claire walked to the bed and sat down.
She thought about the evening.
The food.
The wine.
His hands.
The kiss.
And the fact that she had finally been the one to ask him to stay.

Had that been too much? Had she frightened him away? Perhaps she had allowed herself to be carried away too much by her feelings.
She drew up her legs and wrapped her arms around her knees.

Maybe Daniel didn't feel the same way she did.
Maybe he simply enjoyed her company without really thinking anything more of it.

That thought hurt more than she had expected.
She had not long ago stopped longing for a man. And now that uncertainty was suddenly back—the uncertainty she had almost forgotten.
What if she was mistaken? What if tonight had simply been a pleasant evening for him?

Claire stood up and walked over to the mirror.
She looked at herself.
She no longer saw the uncertain face of the woman who, only a few weeks earlier, had hardly thought about whether a man found her attractive.
She saw a woman who had desires again. And who was in the process of taking a risk.

She walked to the window and looked outside. Tears crept into her eyes.
There was still light on in the guest room.
Claire stopped. She could simply go to bed. And tomorrow, everything would be as it had been before. But did she really want that?

She closed her eyes. Then she steeled herself.

She didn't want to spend tomorrow wondering what might have been. She wanted to know now what Daniel felt for her.

She opened her bedroom door and walked slowly down the hallway.
She stopped once more outside the guest room.
She raised her hand. Hesitated.
Then she knocked softly.

Daniel's voice came from inside.
“Yes?”

Claire opened the door a crack.

Daniel was still lying fully dressed on the bed.
He looked up at her.

“Everything all right?”

Claire nodded.
“Yes.”

She remained standing in the doorway.
“I just wanted to...”
She stopped.

Daniel sat up slightly.
“What did you want?”

Claire smiled shyly.
“I don't really know myself.”

For a moment, there was an awkward silence.

“Do we go to my room, or do we stay here?” Claire said it with a small smile, almost casually.
But her voice revealed that she meant the question less jokingly than she wanted it to sound.

Daniel looked at her for a moment.
“I thought I was sleeping in the guest room,” he said calmly.

Claire nodded.
“I know.”

She smiled again, this time a little more uncertainly.
“What I meant was...”
She stopped.

Daniel waited.

Claire took a deep breath.
“The guest room is pretty small. And I think tonight I'd rather not lie alone in my bedroom wondering whether I'm doing something completely wrong.”

Daniel said nothing at first.

Claire looked at him.
“I could just go back,” she said quietly.

“But you don't want to.”

It wasn't a question.

Claire slowly shook her head.
“No.”
For a moment, the uncertainty disappeared.

Daniel noticed it anyway.

To Claire, it was simply an expression of her own nervousness. To him, it was something else.
He had observed moments like this many times. The brief hesitation. The uncertain look. The search for words.
He believed by now that he could read Claire.

He thought he knew how she would react if she were ever confronted with a situation that did not fit her expectations. Perhaps she would be frightened at first. Perhaps she would try to withdraw from him. But he didn't believe she would be able to resist for long.

Claire still didn't know that Daniel had already incorporated her uncertainty into his plan.

Claire looked at him for another moment.
Then she smiled.
This time it was no longer an uncertain smile.
“Then come.”

Daniel remained standing still at first.
“Are you sure?”

Claire nodded.
“Yes.”
She took his hand.
“I want you to come with me.”

Daniel allowed her to lead him.
He could easily have decided the moment for himself. Instead, he waited until Claire took the first step herself.
She led him out of the small guest room and back into the hallway. As she did, Claire felt something that surprised even her. Not fear. Pleasant excitement.
She had made the decision. Not Daniel. She had.
And that was precisely why she felt comfortable with it.
When she opened the door to her bedroom, she stopped briefly once more.

Daniel looked at her.
“If you want to change your mind, tell me.
Now.”

Claire smiled.
“No. I'm sure.”
Then she gently pulled him into the bedroom and closed the door.
------------------------------------------------------
Daniel heard the door click shut behind him.
He was now standing in the most intimate room in Claire's home:
her bedroom.
If he wanted to, he could let his mask fall right now. He could show her who he really was and what he wanted from her.
But no.

He had begun to enjoy this game that had developed over the past few days. The small steps. Claire's growing trust. The fact that she kept opening doors for him that he hadn't even needed to open himself.
Why should he end it now?
No.
Today was not the right day.
Not yet.

Chapter 10
Physical Attraction

Claire also heard the bedroom door close behind them. It sounded final. And perhaps it was. She had actually reached the point where she was ready to trust Daniel completely. To confide in him. And to surrender herself to him if he was ready to do the same. But who would make the next move?

Claire's thoughts quickly dissolved when Daniel approached her from behind. He wrapped his arms around her. For a moment, he rested his head against the back of her neck before his lips began to caress her throat.

Claire felt the gentle touch against her neck. She closed her eyes and leaned farther back, held firmly by Daniel's strong hands. fHands that slowly moved toward her breasts. They remained there for a moment before beginning to undo the buttons of her blouse. Very slowly. One after another.

A first wave of heat passed through Claire. When had she last experienced a touch like this? She had to go far back into her past to remember such an experience.

Daniel remained standing behind Claire. Of course he had noticed that Claire had apparently chosen her outfit deliberately so that he would notice how the open button revealed part of her bra. Even at that moment, he had realized that tonight would bring a decisive turning point in their relationship.

Until then, their conversations had been rather superficial. The first change had come when Claire had gone into the water at the lake and later allowed him to dry her off. Even then, he had sensed that Claire was unconsciously moving in exactly the direction he wanted her to go.

And now, after he had undone the buttons of her blouse, he pulled it down over her shoulders and let it fall to the floor.

The next step was easy. Daniel opened the clasp of Claire's bra and pulled the straps down over her shoulders so that the elegant lace-trimmed garment also slipped to the floor.
That was the moment when Claire hesitated again. Yes, she had enjoyed the way Daniel had slowly freed her upper body from her blouse and bra. But now some final doubts overcame her. Was what they were doing really right? Almost unconsciously, she crossed her hands over her breasts and covered herself.

At that moment, Daniel's thoughts drifted away. Normally, he would have staged this scene very differently. In his imagination, he heard buttons hitting the floor. He imagined fabric tearing. He imagined a woman's body twisting beneath his hands.
But Claire quickly brought him back to the present. She had put her doubts aside and slipped out of Daniel's arms. Now she stood directly in front of him. She looked gently into his blue eyes. And now she was the one who began opening the buttons of his shirt, until a muscular, black-haired chest appeared. She pressed herself against it.

Chapter 11
Daniel

Hours later, when Claire had fallen asleep in his arms, tired and relaxed, Daniel could finally let his own thoughts run free.
For any normal man, an evening like this would have been a highly erotic experience. Not for Daniel.

He had long since found no pleasure in ordinary sex. And so it had taken considerable effort to play the role he had chosen and keep his friendly mask in place. After all, he had decided to hide his true self for a while longer and use this evening to bind Claire even more closely to him.

How badly he had wanted to tear open the buttons of Claire's blouse when he had slowly undone them. He had barely been able to control his arousal. If he had moved even closer to Claire's back at that moment, he would probably have lost control.

Later, when Claire had opened his shirt and nestled against his chest, he had deliberately steered his thoughts in a completely different, entirely non-erotic direction, while his hands had moved slowly over Claire's bare back. And he had hoped that Claire would be satisfied with these touches. But the evening had ultimately unfolded differently from what Daniel had planned. And it had been difficult for him not to slip out of his role as a gentleman and sensitive lover.

On the other hand, that night had given him the opportunity to get to know Claire and her body more closely. To look at her from head to toe, to touch her. Later, this would allow him to give his dark fantasies concrete form. And those fantasies were growing stronger and more powerful. Daniel could feel that the moment when he would let the mask fall was drawing closer and closer. And the headaches that were now beginning reminded him of the motto he had carried with him for several weeks: “It is better to burn out than to fade away.”
Yes, he would burn. And Claire with him. But the time had not yet come.

Carefully, Daniel freed himself from Claire's arms. He got out of bed and looked once more at her naked body. Then he forced himself to direct his thoughts elsewhere. Because a power was beginning to take hold inside his mind.
A power that was simply waiting to be unleashed.
But that wasn't what he wanted.
Not yet.
He wanted Claire to believe that she was experiencing tenderness.
That she was being desired. That she was safe.
And it had worked.
She had fallen asleep in his arms. Completely trusting him.

Daniel looked down at her.
She had no idea what was going on inside his head. She had no idea that the man she believed she had come to know was only a role.
A mask.
And Daniel had no intention of taking it off yet.

Chapter 12
The Morning After

Claire slowly woke up.
For a moment, she couldn't understand why something felt different from usual. Then her hand reached across the bed.
The other side was empty.
She sat up.
“Daniel?”

No answer.
Claire looked around the bedroom. His shirt was no longer lying over the chair. His shoes were gone as well.
He had left.
Without waking her.

For a brief moment, an unpleasant feeling spread through her.
Why hadn't he woken her?
Could the previous night perhaps have meant something completely different to him than it had to her?

Claire felt the beautiful memories of the evening suddenly overshadowed by a small doubt.
She reached for her smartphone.
No message.
She put it back down.
Perhaps he was in the bathroom. Or already in the kitchen, making coffee for both of them?
But after a few minutes, she finally realized that Daniel had left the house.

Claire sat on the edge of the bed. She was angry with herself. Had Daniel only wanted to sleep with her? If so, why was she even thinking about it? She couldn't shake the uneasy feeling.
Then her smartphone vibrated.
A message.
From Daniel.
“Thank you for the wonderful evening. And the exciting night. Please don't be surprised that you woke up without me. I have an important appointment this morning.”

Claire read the message twice.
Then once more.
And suddenly she had to smile. He had an important appointment. Of course! Why had she let herself worry like that?

The second sentence in particular made her think back to the previous night. To the hours they had spent exploring and enjoying each other's bodies.
She placed the smartphone against her bare chest and sank back into the pillows. The uncertainty was gone. So she had been worrying for no reason. And perhaps it was even a good thing that he had left without waking her. That way, she could spend a little more time alone, lost in her thoughts.

Claire closed her eyes.
Once again, the previous evening appeared before her mind's eye.
His gaze. His closeness. Their approach to one another. The feeling of bare skin against bare skin. And the feeling of having truly been desired again after such a long time.
She smiled.
Perhaps she really had found something she had long believed no longer existed for her.
-----------------------------------------------
Daniel had already left the small apartment he had gone to after leaving Claire alone.
A black bag was now carefully stored in the trunk of his car.
He had rented the apartment several years earlier without his wife knowing about it. For him, it was a retreat—a place where he could be alone and prepare his plans without interruption.
This time, too, he had needed only a short while.
He had packed the bag and left the apartment again.
He closed the trunk and got behind the wheel. But before starting the engine, he took out his smartphone.
A message from his wife had arrived.
“Everything okay with you? I hope you had a quiet evening.”

Daniel looked at the message for several seconds.
Then he replied:
“Everything’s fine. I had an appointment yesterday. There are a few things I need to take care of this morning. I hope you're enjoying your vacation.”
He read his message again.
It was completely inconspicuous. Exactly as it should be.

A few minutes later, her reply arrived:
“Yes, everything is wonderful here. We'll talk again tomorrow. Kiss.”
Daniel briefly looked at the last word. Then he put the phone away.
There was nothing more to say. He simply had to make sure that he continued to present himself to Claire as an unmarried man.

He started the engine.
Carefully stored in the trunk was what he would need later.
And Claire had no idea that her trust in him had now reached exactly the point he had been working toward for so long.

Chapter 13
First Shadows

Claire had been looking forward to seeing Daniel again.
After the night they had spent together, their relationship felt different to her. No longer like a cautious approach, but like something that had developed a familiarity of its own.
This time they didn't meet at her house or at Daniel's. Instead, they met in the early afternoon at a neutral location. A walk through the town center followed by coffee gave them an opportunity to talk.

Claire was relaxed. Perhaps a little too relaxed.
She caught herself looking at Daniel again and again, wondering whether he felt the same way she did.
And so she began wanting to know more about him.

“I actually know surprisingly little about you,” she said.

Daniel smiled.
“What would you like to know?”

“All sorts of things.”
She thought for a moment.
“What did you do before? Where did you grow up? Do you have any brothers or sisters? What do you do when you're not working?”

Daniel answered her questions patiently, but noticeably in general terms.
He told her a little about his childhood, but remained vague about his professional past and skillfully changed the subject whenever Claire asked more specific questions.

Eventually she asked:
“And is there someone in your life?”

Daniel looked at her for a moment. “What do you mean?”

“Well... a woman.”

He smiled. “No.” Nothing more.

Claire waited for a moment. Then she smiled too.
For her, the most important question had been answered.

Daniel was free.
And suddenly the idea of a future together no longer seemed quite so unrealistic.
----------------------------------------------
During the rest of their conversation, however, there were small moments that unsettled Claire.
Daniel casually mentioned one of her habits. “You usually have coffee first thing in the morning and don't eat until later, don't you?”
Claire looked at him in surprise. “How do you know that?”
Daniel shrugged. “Didn't I tell you?”

Claire thought about it. She couldn't remember. But perhaps she really had mentioned it at some point. After all, she didn't want to keep telling him the same stories.

On another occasion, he knew which day of the week she usually went into town to do her shopping. But he had a plausible explanation for that too.
Claire began to wonder how much she had actually told him by now. Apparently, it was more than she realized.
And yet she was left with a strange feeling.
Not mistrust. Not yet. More like bewilderment.
--------------------------------------------------
Some time later, Claire noticed something else.
Daniel was looking at her.
Not as he usually did.
For a brief moment, his gaze was unusually attentive, almost scrutinizing.
Claire fell silent.
“What is it?”

Daniel immediately smiled.
“Nothing.”

His voice once again sounded as warm and calm as ever.

Claire smiled too. But she thought about it for quite some time afterward. Perhaps she had imagined it. Perhaps she was simply more sensitive after the previous night. In the end, she pushed the thought aside. She didn't want to spoil the pleasant afternoon with unfounded doubts.
------------------------------------------------------
Daniel had followed her questions carefully. Claire was beginning to take an interest in his life. He had expected that and had been prepared for it.

He had told her just enough. Not too much. Not too little. Above all, he had made sure she continued to believe that he was single. That was important. Because Claire was certainly not looking for a brief affair.

Daniel now knew that she longed for something lasting. For a man she could trust. For someone with whom she could imagine building a life together again.
And that was precisely why he had to be careful.

He couldn't show her too soon how little she actually knew about his life. Her small questions didn't bother him. On the contrary. They showed him that Claire was becoming more emotionally attached to him. Only her increasing attention to details concerned him.

She had noticed that he knew things about her which, as far as she could remember, she had never told him.
But she still doubted herself. She was still looking for the explanation within herself.
Daniel knew that this situation would not last forever.
He now had to decide how far he could go.
Claire trusted him almost completely. And precisely because of that, he couldn't afford to make a mistake.
He had waited long enough. Long enough to observe, plan and hold himself back.
Claire had opened a door the night before.
Now it was time for him to open the next one.
No matter how.

Chapter 14
The Crack

When they said goodbye, they arranged to meet again early that evening. Claire could hardly wait to see Daniel again. And to find out more about him.

Daniel had chosen a small restaurant not far from Claire's house. It had been his idea, and Claire had agreed without hesitation.

At first, the evening unfolded exactly as she had come to expect from him.
Daniel was attentive without being intrusive. He listened to her, asked questions, and seemed to remember things other men would have forgotten long ago.

Several times Claire caught herself watching him more closely while he spoke.
She liked his calmness. And she liked the fact that he seemed to know exactly what he wanted.

After dinner, Daniel suggested having another coffee at the restaurant.
“Not tonight,” Claire said. “I'm tired.”

“Then at your place?”

Claire smiled.

“No. Really not tonight.”

It was only one sentence.
But for the briefest moment, Daniel's expression changed.

Not much. Just a brief tension around the eyes. The friendly expression disappeared as though someone had flipped a switch. For a moment, Claire thought she saw a dark shadow pass across his face.
Only a moment. Then his expression was friendly and courteous again.

“You're right. You've had a long day.” Daniel's voice sounded completely normal. But hadn't there been a hint of disappointment in it?

On the one hand, Claire was pleased that Daniel apparently still had such a strong interest in her. On the other hand, she couldn't quite interpret that undertone.
She suppressed a question that was on the tip of her tongue. Perhaps she had simply imagined the brief change in his expression.

Daniel signaled to the waiter and paid the bill as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

Outside the restaurant, they walked beside each other in silence for a while.

“I'll take you home,” Daniel said.

“That isn't necessary,” Claire replied cautiously.

“It's late.”

“I only live a few minutes away.”

“Claire.”

He said her name gently, but this time there was something in his voice she didn't recognize.

She stopped.

Daniel looked at her.
For a moment, his expression was completely blank. Then he smiled.
“I'm sorry,” he said. “That sounded more controlling than I intended.”

Claire returned his smile.

“A little.”
“Then I suppose I'll have to get used to the fact that you have a mind of your own.”

He said it lightly, almost teasingly.

Claire laughed.
“You'd better.”

“I will.”
He took a step back.

“All right. You go on alone.”

Claire nodded.
They said goodbye.

After walking a few yards, she turned around once more.

Daniel was still standing exactly where she had left him.

She waved. He raised his hand only slightly. A rigid smile remained on his face until she disappeared around the corner.
Only then did his expression change.
Daniel remained standing for another moment. She had said no. And with that single word, she had disrupted his plan for the evening.
No problem. There was still time. Even so, it irritated him more than he cared to admit.

Her refusal felt like rejection—something he had experienced only rarely. The moment lodged itself in his memory.
He would not let her take control away from him so easily.
________________________________________
Claire walked home slowly.
The evening had been beautiful.

So why couldn't she stop thinking about those few strange seconds outside the restaurant?
She replayed the scene again and again.

Perhaps she had simply overinterpreted his reaction.
After all, Daniel had accepted her decision immediately. fAnd wasn't it understandable that he had been disappointed?

She had turned down his offer to accompany her home. Maybe she herself had hurt him a little.
The thought made her feel unexpectedly guilty.

By the time she reached her front door, she had almost convinced herself that the uneasy feeling had been entirely her own invention.
Daniel wasn't perfect.
He was only human.
And perhaps that was exactly what made him so appealing.

Chapter 15
Back at the Lake

Claire had barely finished breakfast the next morning when her phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
!I was thinking about our first afternoon at the lake yesterday. Would you feel like going back there tomorrow? I promise I'll bring better coffee this time."

Claire smiled before she had even finished reading.
She didn't hesitate.
"I'd love to."

The following afternoon, Daniel was already waiting for her outside her house.
As soon as she got into the car, she noticed the picnic basket on the back seat.

“You really came prepared.”

“I've learned that hungry women are dangerous.”

Claire laughed.
“Is that your professional experience?”

“Pure instinct.”

The drive felt different from the first time.
The initial uncertainty between them had disappeared.
They teased each other, interrupted one another, laughed more often.
It felt less like a date now.
More like two people who had already become part of each other's everyday lives.

When they reached the lake, the place was as deserted as before.
The water shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.

“This is becoming our place,” Claire said quietly.

Daniel looked at her.
“I was hoping you'd say that.”

They spread the blanket in almost exactly the same spot as before.
This time Daniel had packed sandwiches, fruit, coffee in a thermos, and a small bottle of white wine.

“You're setting the bar rather high,” Claire said.

“I had something to live up to.”

After lunch they wandered barefoot along the shoreline.

Claire picked up flat stones and tried to skip them across the water.
Most of them sank immediately.

Daniel watched, amused.
“You're pretending you've done this all your life.”
“I am.”
She threw another stone.
It bounced twice.

“There!”

“I'll admit defeat.”

Claire grinned triumphantly.
For a while they simply stood side by side, watching the gentle ripples spread across the lake.
Then Daniel glanced at her.
“Did you bring a swimsuit this time?”

Claire looked at him in surprise.
“No.”

“So you're either much more sensible than last time…”
He paused deliberately.
“…or just as brave.”

Claire laughed.
“You're trying to challenge me.”

“Am I?”

She looked out across the water.
Then back at him.

“Maybe.”
Without another word, she slipped off her sandals.
Then her blouse. Her jeans followed.

Daniel remained silent.

She caught his gaze for only a second. Then she smiled mischievously.
“You're right.”
She turned toward the lake.
“I haven't become any more sensible.”
A moment later she ran laughing into the water.

Daniel watched her disappear beneath the surface before emerging again farther out.
For a few minutes she swam alone.
The water was pleasantly cool now.

When she finally returned to shore, droplets glistened on her skin in the sunlight.
She stopped in front of Daniel.
“Well?”

He smiled.
“I had a feeling you'd do exactly that.”

She laughed.
“I hate it when you're right.”

Daniel picked up the large towel from the blanket.
“Come here.”

Claire stepped closer without hesitation.
As before, she let the towel settle around her shoulders.

Daniel began drying her damp hair. His movements were calm and unhurried. This time, though, his hands lingered just a little longer.

Not possessively. Not intrusively.
Simply with the quiet certainty of a man who no longer wondered whether he was allowed to touch her.
Claire closed her eyes for a moment. She enjoyed the warmth of the towel. And even more, the feeling that Daniel desired her.

When she opened her eyes again, he was looking at her.
Not with hunger. With admiration.

“You're beautiful,” he said softly.

Claire felt herself blush.
“At my age?”

Daniel smiled.
“Exactly at your age.”

For a moment neither of them spoke.
The silence felt fuller than words.

Later, wrapped in the towel, Claire leaned against his shoulder on the blanket. She rested her head against him almost absentmindedly.

Daniel slipped an arm around her.
She didn't move.

The breeze carried the scent of pine trees across the lake.
Claire listened to his heartbeat.
She couldn't remember the last time another person's closeness had felt so natural.

On the drive home, she remained unusually quiet. Not because she had nothing to say.
Because she was thinking.

Again and again, she returned to the moment when Daniel had dried her hair. To the tenderness in his touch. To the warmth in his voice. And to the certainty that she wanted him close to her again.

When Daniel stopped outside her house, Claire turned toward him before getting out.
“Would you like to come in?”

Daniel looked at her.
“For coffee?”

She smiled knowingly.
“For whatever the evening decides.”

Daniel held her gaze for a long moment.
Then he nodded.
Daniel held her gaze for a moment. Then he smiled. “I’d love to. I’ll just get my bag.”
He said nothing more. He walked to the trunk and took out the black bag he had packed so carefully in his small apartment.

Claire cast a brief glance at the bag but didn't ask what was inside. Daniel would have his reasons. Perhaps he had already expected to spend the night with her again and wanted to be prepared. Which, in a way, was true …

Inside the house, Claire put down her own bag and went into the kitchen. Daniel followed her. She poured them both something to drink, but neither of them was really interested in it anymore.

A peculiar sense of familiarity had developed between them. There was no longer any awkwardness like there had been the first time. Instead, there was an anticipation they both could feel and that neither of them needed to put into words.

Claire walked over to the window.
“You know,” she said softly, “I never thought I could feel this way again.”

Daniel looked at her.
“How do you feel?”

She turned toward him.
“Alive.”

The word hung between them for a moment.

Daniel stepped closer.
Claire didn't step back.
When he kissed her, she returned the kiss without hesitation.

A short while later, they lay naked beside each other in her bedroom.

Claire thought back once more to their first evening together. Once again, she felt that sense of opening herself to another person while at the same time rediscovering a part of herself she had long believed she had lost.

She nestled against Daniel.

“Will you stay a little longer?” she asked sleepily.

“Of course.”

A short while later, she had fallen asleep.

Her head rested against his shoulder, one hand lying lightly on his chest.

Only Daniel remained awake. For a long time, he looked at the woman lying naked beside him in the bed.
Claire had no idea how well he knew her by now. She had no idea that this evening meant something entirely different to him.

He slowly brushed a strand of hair away from her face. Then his thoughts drifted back.
Not to Claire. To another woman. To an evening some time ago.
________________________________________
She had trusted him back then.
Daniel still remembered exactly how easy it had been to gain her trust. A few weeks had been enough. He had listened, shown understanding, and said exactly the things she wanted to hear.
He had already known that she lived alone. That no one regularly checked on her. That she was afraid of becoming a burden to other people.
He had not left these things to chance.
When she finally realized that he wanted something from her other than what she had assumed, it was too late.
At some point, his expression had changed. It had aroused suspicion in her. Then fear. And finally the realization that she had completely misjudged him.
Daniel remembered that look.
He also remembered her pleading after she had realized that he had gained complete control of the situation.
He had felt no triumph at the time. Only a deep satisfaction that everything had unfolded exactly as he had planned. And now the time had come to take what he had been waiting for all those weeks …
Later, he had calmly explained what would happen if she went to the police.
He had needed no loud threats. Only a few carefully chosen words.
She had understood. And she had remained silent.

Daniel's thoughts returned to Claire.
She was sleeping peacefully in his arms. A barely perceptible smile rested on her face.

This time was different.
Claire had opened the door for him herself. And she had no idea whom she had let inside.
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment. He still had time. And this time, he would not rush anything.

Chapter 16
The Morning After

Claire slowly woke up.
For a few moments, she simply lay there, enjoying the warmth of Daniel's body beside her. His arm was around her, and she could feel his steady breathing.
A smile appeared on her face.

The previous night came back to her. The closeness, his tenderness, the feeling of being completely a woman again after such a long time. It had been a long time since she had opened herself to a man so naturally. Opened herself in every sense of the word.
And now Daniel was lying beside her.

She turned her head and looked at him.
He was still asleep.

Claire remained where she was for a moment, letting the memory of the night wash over her once more. She felt happy. Almost lighthearted.
Perhaps she had really found someone she had been searching for for a long time. A man who desired her and was still tender with her.

Eventually, she carefully slipped out of his embrace and stood up. She reached for her robe and put it on.
“I'll make us some coffee,” she said softly.

She had barely taken a step when Daniel's voice came from behind her.

“Take the robe off again.”

Claire stopped.
She turned around and looked at him.

Daniel was still lying in bed, watching her.

For a moment, she didn't know what to say. Then she had to smile.
Of course. He simply wanted to see her again. Naked. And perhaps not just look at her.

The thought flattered her. “You really can't get enough of me, can you?” she said softly.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

“Take it off.”

His voice was calm. But it sounded more commanding than before.

Claire hesitated only briefly. Then she let the robe slip from her shoulders.

Daniel got out of bed.

Claire expected him to come toward her. Instead, he walked past her without a word. Toward the dresser where she also kept her underwear.

Claire watched him in surprise.

He opened a drawer.
Her drawer.

She stared as Daniel began going through the things inside it. Quite casually.
“What are you looking for?”

Daniel didn't answer.
He pushed some clothes aside, reached deeper into the drawer, and finally pulled something out.

Claire recognized the color immediately. Red.
Daniel was holding a small piece of clothing. Then he found several more pieces. A matching bra, a garter belt, and the stockings that went with it.

Claire looked at him in surprise. She had completely forgotten that she even still owned those things.

Daniel walked toward her and tossed them to her.

Claire caught them, bewildered.

Daniel looked at her with a glassy expression in his eyes. “Put these on for me.”

It was not a suggestion. And it wasn't a question. It was an unmistakable command.

Claire looked down at the red lingerie in her hands. Then back at Daniel.

For the first time that morning, she didn't know what to say. Then she said quietly and uncertainly: “These things remind me too much of my former husband. I should have thrown them away a long time ago.”

Daniel pressed the garments firmly into her hands. “I said, put them on!”

Claire could tell from both his expression and his tone that he would not tolerate any objection. She froze. Still she stood there motionless, the red lingerie in her hands. Then another “No!” escaped her lips. “I don't want to put these things on. But you can choose something else…”

Claire was confused. This wasn't the Daniel she had come to know and love over the past few days.
This was a completely different man.
She looked at him in shock.

Chapter 17
The Mask Falls

The look in Claire's eyes reminded Daniel of another woman.

A bar. An evening several months earlier.
She had been attractive, self-confident, and initially very approachable. Daniel had known after only a short time that he had found his next victim. And this time he hadn't wanted to settle for a fleeting encounter.
He had slowly gotten her drunk. Not so drunk that she lost consciousness, but just enough for her caution to fade.
Later, he had taken her home.
She had laughed about the fact that he accompanied her all the way to her bedroom.
Even when he had told her to undress, she had still understood it as part of an exciting game.
Then Daniel's tone had changed.
Seduction became commands.
The woman realized too late that she had completely misjudged him.
What followed would remain with her for the rest of her life.
When Daniel finally left, he had looked at her once more.
“This will teach you a lesson.”
Then his thoughts returned to Claire.

At exactly the moment when he was about to make it unmistakably clear to her that he would tolerate no objection, the headache struck again. The pain suddenly returned. This time it was so intense that, for a moment, Daniel thought he was going to lose his footing.
He knew this pain. But never before had an attack struck him so suddenly and so violently.

Then, for the first time, Daniel was truly afraid.
Daniel began to sway and sat down on the edge of the bed. He remembered the words of the doctor he had consulted several months earlier because of these headaches. After a series of examinations, the doctor had given him the diagnosis: Daniel had a brain tumor. One that could not be treated.

The doctor had explained that he did not have much time left. And that he should use that time wisely.

Yes, Daniel had thought at the time, he would use that time wisely. One last time. “It is better to burn out than to fade away.” At the time, he no longer remembered where he had read that motto. But ever since, those words had continued to circle through his mind. Then Claire had happened to cross his path. And a final plan had begun to take shape in his mind.

“Daniel, what's wrong with you? Say something!”

Claire's words brought Daniel back to the present. Confused, he realized that he was sitting on the bed. Claire was standing in front of him, asking whether he needed a doctor. And she was still holding the red lingerie in her hand!

Slowly, his memories returned. Memories of the woman who had immediately caught his attention several weeks earlier at the shopping center. The woman he had discreetly followed as she drove home with her purchases to an isolated house. He remembered how a plan had gradually taken shape in his mind. He had followed her several times over the following days when she drove into town. He had made inquiries about her. He had learned that she had been divorced for some time and had lived alone ever since. Yes, apparently she was exactly what he had been looking for for his final act.

Then, one day, when she had gone to visit a friend, he had secretly tampered with her fuel line so that her car would break down on the way home.

From that point on, everything had been child's play. Yes, he had repeatedly had to restrain himself from simply throwing himself at her. For example, when she had gone swimming during their first visit to the lake. It would have been easy to take what he wanted from her then. But that had seemed too easy to him. He wanted to delay his final act, to play a sinister game with his victim. And he had succeeded. Even though he had had to play a role that was actually repulsive to him: consensual sex!

But now the moment had come when he had to act. Because apparently, time was running out for him! Daniel could literally hear the clock ticking endlessly inside his head.
Slowly, the fog in his mind began to clear. And with it, his resolve returned. He would now have Claire all to himself. For himself alone. And one last time, he would turn his dark fantasies into reality!

He looked into her eyes and saw something he had seen before. Resistance. And for the first time, something resembling fear. Not real fear yet. But it would come. He would make sure of that. And he would do it now.
Immediately.

Claire stared into Daniel's eyes. The normally bright blue of his irises had darkened. His friendly expression had disappeared. At first, she had been afraid for Daniel. Now she felt a different kind of fear. Fear for herself. A shiver ran through her body.

Step by step, Claire backed toward the bedroom door. She was still unsure what to make of the situation. But she knew that she wanted to get away from him. She reached for the door handle and opened the door. She stepped into the hallway.
And at that exact moment, a powerful hand seized her shoulder and pulled her back.

Daniel shook off the stupor the headache had forced upon him. He caught sight of Claire just as she was about to open the bedroom door. And he saw in her eyes that she had realized something was wrong here—terribly wrong. She was right, of course.

Claire was evidently trying to flee from him. Something no woman had ever managed to do before. None had escaped him; he had possessed them all, acting out his obsessions and fantasies upon them. And now the time had come to fulfill his ultimate fantasy. It wasn't for nothing that he had spent the last few weeks playing a role that didn't really suit him. But lately, the game with Claire had actually started to be fun. And he wasn't about to let the scenario he’d devised slip away just because Claire thought she could escape him! Not him!
Claire felt a strong hand grab her shoulder and yank her back into the bedroom. Startled, she dropped the red lingerie she was still holding onto the floor. Then she was spun around so violently that she was forced to look Daniel in the face.

Claire froze. Daniel’s face had twisted into a grotesque mask—the kind she usually only saw in horror movies. And now, it seemed, she had ended up in a horror movie herself. As the lead actress, she suddenly realized.

"You want to run away, my dear Claire? But why? What’s wrong? Didn't you enjoy what we’ve done together over the last few days and hours? The way I pampered you until you screamed with pleasure? Until your little pussy made me soaking wet and you couldn't stop gushing?"

It wasn’t just Daniel’s face that had changed. His voice had shifted, too, taking on a tone that was at once sarcastic and menacing—a tone that made Claire shudder.

She glanced around frantically. The only way out was through the bedroom door. And even though Daniel was standing right beside the bed, staring at her with a look of raw hunger, the distance to the door felt vast—far too vast. Still, her only hope lay in trying. She hoped to make it into the hallway, and from there to the kitchen, where she could grab a knife to better defend herself.

For a moment, Daniel was distracted, still somewhat dazed by the sudden, violent headache that had struck him. That was why he was to slow to notice when Claire suddenly took two quick steps, threw open the bedroom door, and bolted into the hallway. She raced straight into the kitchen and snatched a long, sharp-looking knife from the block on the counter.

For a brief moment, Claire breathed a sigh of relief. She had actually escaped the bedroom and managed to get a knife into her hand—something that eased her fear and uncertainty just a little.

But what now? What was she to do? She knew only one thing: she had to get out—out of her own home, the place where she had always felt so safe. But then what?

She was stark naked. Her car was parked right outside the front door, but the keys were hanging on the rack in the hallway. The hallway where Daniel was now standing—also naked, just as God had made him. Yet, while she had gazed at that very body with adoration only the night before, the sight before her now made her shudder.

David’s eyes were wide and bloodshot. His hard cock—which she had so recently caressed with her mouth while he gripped her hair and pressed her head firmly against his groin—now looked simply menacing. And then Daniel began to advance on her, step by step!

The mouth in his twisted, contorted face began to open, and he murmured—quietly, menacingly quietly: "In such a rush, dearest Claire? The day has barely begun. And we both still want to have some fun together. Or rather: *I* am going to have my fun with *you*!"

Daniel took another step closer to Claire. She was clutching the knife with both hands, holding it out defensively with arms extended and hands trembling from fear.

"Stay back, Daniel, or I’ll strike!" Claire tried to back away slowly. But she didn't get far; the kitchen counter blocked any escape route. Now she had only one option left: pray to God and hope she could manage to fend Daniel off—by any means necessary.

But he had no intention of breaking off his attack. On the contrary: Claire’s attempt to flee and her grab for the knife had snapped him fully back to the present. With total focus, he studied the naked woman standing before him. The fear in her eyes was unmistakable—but so was her determination to fight back with everything she had.

Daniel took a deep breath. This situation surpassed his wildest fantasies. Never before had a woman dared to seriously stand up to him. Yes, this final hunt would outdo everything he had experienced so far. And knowing he had nothing left to lose anyway, a smirk spread across his face. A smile that completely bewildered Claire. For in the blink of an eye, Daniel’s face transformed into the very look she had so fondly enjoyed—the one that had made her feel increasingly at ease. That is, until the mask had slipped just moments before.

For a moment, Claire felt a glimmer of hope. If she could manage to get past Daniel to the front door, she might stand a chance against him. But for now, she remained trapped like a rabbit, staring at her hunter.

Yes, Daniel was hunting. Hunting for something special—a woman who had already belonged to him over the past few days and nights. A woman he had molded to his liking until she was finally, irrevocably his. And now, he would take from her everything his mind had fantasized about these past few days. And not gently, either; he’d had enough of that. It was finally time to show Claire the real Daniel—and to complete his work with her, and upon her.

Watchful and tense, he took another step toward Claire.
"Claire, what do you want with that knife? Put it aside and do exactly what I asked. Then nothing will happen to you, and you’ll see—we’re going to have a lot of fun together!" Daniel grinned inwardly at that last sentence. Yes, he would certainly have his fun with Claire. But would she feel the same way?

Claire looked around, bewildered and terrified. What could she do? Every escape route was blocked; Daniel was now standing just two steps away from her. The tip of her raised knife was almost touching his chest.

"Daniel, please, let’s talk. This is probably all just a misunderstanding! It must be the headaches—that’s why you’re acting this way all of a sudden!"

Daniel laughed inwardly. Sure, that damn headache attack had thrown his plans off a little. But not much. Quite the opposite, in fact. Finally, he had prey before him that was almost an equal match. And that would make breaking her all the more satisfying. And certainly not gently…

For a moment, he glanced toward the door, as if he had heard something there. And Claire, having noticed this, turned her gaze aside as well.

This was Daniel’s chance. One he ruthlessly seized!
In a flash, he knocked the knife from Claire’s hand; it clattered to the floor. Then he stepped behind her and wrapped an arm around her neck, cutting off her air until her desperate struggle slowly but surely began to fade.

"Sweetheart, you had your chance. And you didn't take it. What a mistake that was. Let the games begin!"

While his arm kept a tight grip on Claire’s neck, his other hand roamed over her body. Not gently or tenderly, as it had just hours before—no, this time the touch was brutal and painful.
Claire felt one of Daniel’s hands move over her breasts, seeking out her nipples. He twisted, pulled, and yanked at them until she cried out—though her screams were stifled by the arm still wrapped around her throat. And who could possibly hear her out here in this isolation?

Panic seized Claire. She realized she had fallen into the clutches of a madman, a monster. And it was her own fault—the result of the blind trust she had placed in Daniel, ignoring the faint warning signals her brain had tried to send her!

"AAAAARRRRGGG!"
Claire screamed again as Daniel brutally yanked at her breasts.

"Yes, go ahead and scream, sweetheart—it’s music to my ears. A far cry from your declarations of love last night. But this is just the beginning."

Daniel’s free hand moved down from her breasts, across her stomach and hips, to her buttocks.

"I had actually intended to play with you a little longer. But you dared to defy me. Now you’re going to pay for that. I’m going to break you. And after that... after that, I’m going to have a lot of fun with you. Without you ever daring to fight back again!" Claire felt the grip on her bottom tighten. She felt Daniel’s fingers exploring, finally finding her most intimate spot—the place no man had ever touched before. Not even her husband. At the same time, a sudden realization washed over her: she knew exactly what Daniel intended to do next.

And sure enough, the arm around her neck suddenly let go. But before she could even catch her breath, her upper body was shoved onto the kitchen counter. A strong hand pressed down on her spine, pinning her motionless in place.

"Alright, sweetheart, let's see what we've got here!" Two hands slid over Claire’s buttocks, ruthlessly spreading them apart. This gave Daniel a perfect view of her small, tight, brown asshole, now exposed and completely defenseless.

If Daniel was already fully aroused, the sight seemed to make his cock swell even more; he saw the fear in her eyes and the pearls of nervous sweat forming on her forehead.
Almost tenderly, he took his cock—which had grown to an impressively large size—into his hand. The Viagra he’d secretly taken earlier might have played a part in his arousal, but it was likely the thought of acting out his deepest fantasies with Claire that truly drove it.

Claire could feel the tip of Daniel’s cock tracing a path deeper and deeper along the cleft of her buttocks. Her knees began to tremble. She had noticed the size of his monster cock, and if he actually tried to penetrate her anus with it...

For a moment, the pressure against her backside eased, and Daniel’s hands let go of her buttocks. But only for a moment. Then she felt something slippery trickling down between her cheeks. And then she saw it: Daniel had grabbed a bottle of cooking oil from the counter and poured a generous amount over her rear. She was about to find out exactly why. For even though Daniel wanted to break her by force, he was smart enough to know that he would hurt himself if he tried to shove his hard cock into that dry, tight asshole. No, not shove—ram!
So, he spread the oil with his fingers around and inside Claire’s asshole. He thrust first one, then two, and finally three fingers into that tight space, leaving Claire no chance to wriggle free.
And then he thrust!

Two screams rang out simultaneously, echoing through the house. And only one of them was a cry of pleasure.

More cries followed as Daniel penetrated deeper into Claire—who felt as though her very core were being torn apart by him. Which, in fact, was true. But that was only the beginning!

The final Chapter – Burned Out?

Hours later…

Daniel got up from the bed and looked down at Claire’s battered and violated body, blood running down onto the bedsheet.

He had done it. He had broken Claire. Not only psychologically, but physically as well. He had achieved his goal.

Now there was only one thing left: Claire’s final end, for which he had thought of something special. And then he would be able to burn out completely, without fading away. His name would still be on everyone’s lips even after he had long since rotted beneath the ground.

Claire seemed to sense that her end was near. Once again, she tried to open her mouth. Tried to beg for mercy, even though by now she knew it would be useless. But only unintelligible sounds came from her bloody lips.

She raised her head, searching for Daniel’s eyes one last time. She saw him smiling at her with self-satisfaction. And then she suddenly noticed a change. At first slowly, almost imperceptibly. But then Daniel grabbed both sides of his head.

She remembered the moment when Daniel had suffered an attack like this for the first time. When she had still wondered how she might be able to help him. Many hours had passed since then. She had completely lost track of time, and her body seemed to consist of nothing but pain. But she was still alive.

The renewed headache attack came out of nowhere for Daniel. During the past few hours, he had been completely absorbed in indulging his sick fantasies with Claire. Yet now, precisely when he was about to take the final step, the pain overcame him.

Not slowly, as it had during the past few months. No, it swept over him like a wave!

Then he collapsed to the floor. A few final convulsions passed through his body before his eyes finally went blank.

For a moment, Claire held her breath. Then she knew that Daniel was dead. And she was still alive!
