The Pyramid of Atum Ra - Ravished in a Flash Final

The Pyramid of Atum Ra

Maya read the hieroglyphics of the ancient tome again. Only one may enter the tomb wearing clothing of a slave, for if one could humble themselves then one deserves the treasure. Or something like that. There were a few things Maya couldn’t read, but she was confident she had enough context clues. And it worked out, she had finally found the Pyramid of Atum Ra. Many had tried to find the lost pyramid in the Valley of the Kings. Everyone dismissed the pyramid as a myth or urban legend. Maya believed otherwise. And it turned out she was right.

As Maya entered the pyramid, she rubbed her hands over her arms. It was cold. Wearing nothing but rags a typical slave woman in Egypt wore didn’t help the chill. It was even colder than the Great Pyramid. The reminder of the Great Pyramid made Maya smile at the thought of her rival Ebon wasting his time there. Thinking of Ebon made Maya’s blood boil. Ebon laughed at her…well, all of the other archeologists did, but Ebon laughed the loudest. They wouldn’t be laughing when Maya returned with treasures beyond imagination.

Contrary to popular belief and movies, the ancient pyramids did not contain booby traps like spikes, darts, boulders, or pits of acid. However, Maya knew she still had to be careful of sudden vertical drops and dead ends. She needed to be sure of each step and mark a trail that she could easily follow back. Sunflower seeds served that purpose, Hansel and Gretel style.

For what felt like hours, Maya wandered through the pyramid of Atum Ra. She didn’t encounter any vertical drops, but there were plenty of dead ends. The sunflower seeds were running low too. Maya wasn’t concerned. She could probably return the next day with more ways to mark her trail. No one else knew of the location yet.

A glint caught Maya’s eye just as she was contemplating returning to the entrance of the pyramid. Could it be? Treasure? Yes! As she entered the tomb of Atum Ra, something didn’t feel right. Instead of images of the god Atum Ra, she was seeing images of a serpent. The serpent meant she was in an area honoring Apep, a god that directly opposed Atum Ra.

Confused, Maya looked at the hieroglyphics on the walls. After a few moments she was able to determine the walls said, “There can only be one to enter here. You are not alone.” “But I am alone,” Maya said aloud, puzzled. “Not quite,” a smug voice behind her said.

Maya whirled around to find Ebon grinning at her. He followed her, the bastard. “Damn it, Ebon. Why did you have to follow me, of all the times?” Ebon’s presence somehow made the real tomb of Atum Ra hidden from both of them. But how could the ancient Egyptians have designed something so sophisticated? Unless…

“Who are you, really?” Maya asked Ebon. Ebon’s grin grew wider. “I come from an ancient family that has guarded the pyramid of Atum Ra for thousands of years.” His tone turned prideful, “We have also aided in protecting the secrets of the Great Pyramid. No outsider has ever disturbed the tomb of Atum Ra.” Ebon’s eyes looked daggers at Maya, “And I intend to keep it that way.” Maya gulped and took an involuntary step back. “Wh…what are you g…going to do?” She stammered.

He answered her by quickly closing the gap between them and twisting her arms behind her back. “Ow!” Maya screamed. “Don’t hurt me please!” He cackled, “I can do whatever I want, little slave girl.” Maya mentally slapped herself. She thought it was weird to wear slave clothing to find the entrance to a pyramid but was so obsessed with following the clues that it made her throw caution out the window. The whole thing had been an elaborate trap!

As if he read her thoughts, Ebon cackled again. “My family has lured people here for generations with that book.” Maya yelped as his grip tightened. Ebon continued in his smug voice, “You will bear me a child to continue my family’s legacy after I am gone.” Maya’s eyes widened, “No,” she whispered. She tried to worm her way out of Ebon’s grip, but his hands held her like iron. “No, please,” she begged.

Ebon dragged Maya through a narrow passage that sealed itself behind them with a sound like a closing throat. The air changed to feel older, heavier. The walls here were not carved with prayers or triumphs, but with records. Names. Dates. Lineages stretching back farther than memory. Human lives that were reduced to inscriptions.

Maya was dragged to a pair of wall shackles. The iron bit into her skin as Ebon fastened the shackles to her wrists. She could only move her wrists half a foot away from the wall. Maya strained against the chains, her voice echoing uselessly through the chamber. No one else would ever hear her. She was trapped.

Maya stared at the names etched into the stone as Ebon roughly took her womanhood. As she screamed from the pain she dimly realized they were people just like her. Her screams turned into sobs as the gravity of her situation sunk into her soul. The pyramid of Atum Ra had been found many times before. But no one who found it had ever been allowed to leave.

A very intriguing story focusing very strongly on the world and setting. The end came a bit suddenly, especially since by count you hadn't used your word budget.

An interesting story, but it could definitely have been a bit more detailed at the end. And I wasn't entirely clear on the connection to the competition's theme.

As with the round before, the themes are a bit weak.
This story sadly did not "catch" me.

I can mirror the sentiment that the execution of the theme didn't convince me. I also feel that the pacing with this one feels off. The start feels very slow and exposition heavy and we don't get much in terms of characterization for our protagonist. The more flash fiction I read, the more do I come to the conclusion that exposition heavy starts don't work well in flash fiction.

But I'm curious whether there really is a missing pyramid of Atum Ra or whether you made that up. I enjoyed the lore behind the story, maybe because it reminded me of Star Gate.

I wondered the same thing, but thought it could not be, since it would be pretty impossible to miss a great pyramid.
But I was curious enough to search.

Apparently there is no pyramid of Atum Ra.
But there are smaller pyramids, pyramids that had never reached their full height, and pyramids that have broken down over the millenia.
So there might still be some to be found beneath the sands.
Just as there may be some pyramids in middle america, overgrown with jungle, or remnants of ziggurats.

But the story implied something big, like Cheops and Chepren had.

Made it up. When I saw the theme of "There Can Only Be One" I thought about the Cave of Wonders from Aladdin where "Only one may enter here, one whose worth lies all within, the diamond in the rough!" Changed it to a hidden pyramid that could be found under specific conditions, one of the conditions was seemingly being alone to enter.

The Cave of Wonders would have probably been a better choice for this theme. I also didn't include detail at the end to make the reader want more since wanting more is the point of flash fiction, but that seems to have sadly not worked as well as I hoped.

I quite liked the setting of the story in an ancient Egyptian pyramid. Always been a bit of an Egyptian history nerd. Yeah, flash fiction is a difficult creature to work with, and perhaps some of the early exposition could have been spent on a little more character development. The last part did seem rushed and maybe it didn't need to be. Stretched out to a longer story, this could be made into a great tale. I have a soft spot for Two Stews In a Pot (it's the username I invented) and I do hope you win, so we shall keep our fingers crossed.

If one does not believe in magic then dressing like some inscription says makes no sense, but I don't really think a change of clothing would have saved her anyway, I don't like the ending zooming out so much, also this story is also too short, but well written :)

Both stories are well written, congratulations and thanks to the authors! What I particularly liked about this one was that, despite its shortness, it had a backstory. Of course, this had the disadvantage that the rape at the end was too short and left much to the imagination.
