NaNoWriMo Challenge

Post by LtBroccoli »

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month. Every year for the last quarter century, writers would challenge themselves to write a novel in 30 days or less. Starting November 1, writers would try to write a novel of at least 50,000 words by the end of the month. This is the writing equivalent of a marathon.

Here's the rules for the challenge:
  • Writing starts at Midnight, November 1st local time and ends 11:59:59 November 30th.
  • Novels must reach a minimum of 50k words. It can be either a complete story or the first 50k words of a longer story.
  • You can do any and all prep work ahead of time. Outlines, backstories, research notes, maps, etc., you can start that today.
  • Narrative format is preferred but not mandatory. I took this challenge back in 2021 with a screenplay/television series, but this time I'm trying with a narrative novel.
  • Previous content doesn't count towards the 50k words. For example, if I write a continuation of Mindwalker Memoirs and include sections from previous chapters, those sections don't count.
  • Content can be anything that won't get us thrown off the internet. It doesn't have to be smut, just as long as it's something you want to write and can be posted.
  • Editing is not necessary. It doesn't have to be polished. That's what second drafts are for.
Also, this is a challenge, not a contest. You win by crossing that finish line with that word count passing 50,000.

I'm taking up this challenge. If anyone else is interested, feel free to join in.

@LtBroccoli How do you envisage posting the novels? A bunch of chapters posted in succession on 1 December would show that the challenge was met, but it might be overwhelming for the readers.

What I'm thinking is it's up to the author how they want to post it. If they want to post as they go along, great. That would be the preferred method but if they want to wait until they reach the counts or end of the month, it's their call. I try to post a chunk at a time, but that's not always possible. When I did this back in 2021, because I wrote a screenplay it had a lot more formatting and that is a real pain in the ass so once I reached 500 pages (screenplays are kinda weird like that) I did all the formatting at once and then posted all of it in a row.

Would there be a guideline for the novel? I'm currently writing a multi-part story that I could possibly expand to 50,000 words. If the forum still exists...

Not sure what you mean by guideline.
