Used and Abused is a tournament format, meaning that two contestants will face off against each other in a duel, each of them writing a short story (1,000 to 5,000 words) for the same theme/prompt. Contestants will get two weeks to write their story and after another week of voting, the author of the higher rated story will advance to the next round. The themes for each round will be revealed at the beginning of the writing period. If you want to participate, then you can sign up until July 4 22:00 CEST.
Contestants will be anonymous until they drop out of the tournament. If you want to participate, please suggest a pen name (preferably avoid copyrighted characters). The pen name you suggest will at random be given to some other contestant to hide their real name. So whatever ridiculous name you come up with, some other contestant will have to bear as their burden until they drop out or triumph at the very end! I can only encourage you to suggest a pen name that will make whoever it gets assigned to groan in frustration...
Since there has been confusion around this in our last tournament: Each matchup will have its own theme/prompt. A theme is NOT the title of a story. You can choose the title of your story however you want, no restrictions at all. But your story should incorporate the theme/prompt assigned to your match somehow. The title of your story's thread will then read something like this:

As a contestant, you will publish your story some time during the two week writing period in a separate board. That board will only be visible to contestants (and admins). Inside that board, you will only be able to see your own threads and a pinned thread that will tell you exactly what you need to do to maintain your anonymity. You will not be able to see the stories of other contestants inside that board. Once the voting period begins, I will move all stories at once either to the Public Stories board or a contest board and people will be able to read and vote for the stories using the reputation system.
Used and Abused Rules
- Language: English
- Length: 1,000 to 5,000 words
- Tags: There are no restrictions on which tags you can use other than that your story needs to use the tags Eng and Short. Consensual stories are welcome too, despite what the name of the tournament might suggest.
- Voting: The winner of each match-up will be determined by the reputation gained during the voting period. Voting for your own story is forbidden since it is impossible to rate your own posts under normal circumstances.
- Schedule: Each Round begins on Sunday 22:00 CEST.
- 2 weeks of writing
- 1 week of voting
- Anonymity: All stories will be published under randomly assigned pen names.
- Every contestant can suggest a pen name upon signing up for the tournament. The name they suggest will be assigned to some other contestant at random.
- In case a contestant does not suggest a pen name for their competitors, I will make up one myself.
- During the tournament, reputation gained by entries will be added to an anonymous account. Once the tournament is over, that reputation will be transferred to the real account.
- Formalities:
- Each entry has to designate the match-up its competing in in its title in the following form: Used and Abused QF-1 (for example in case of the first quarter final match). This can be removed once the contest is over.
- Each entry has to contain a link before the beginning of the story that links back to the contest topic, i.e. this one.
- Each entry has to contain a link before the beginning of the story that links to the story it is competing against. I will add this link for you.
- Rewards:
- Special title for the winner of the contest (except for mods and admins)
- Each story that has won their match will be pinned to the top of the public stories board for a week after the contest has ended
- Each won duel will get the winner 10 reputation points. Winning the entire contest will yield another 20 reputation points.
I hope that we get at least 8 participants. Last time, we had 7, I would love it if we get a complete Quarter-Final this time. I myself will likely throw my hat into the ring in case we get a number like 7 or 15 contestants. However, if somebody objects to me participating as the admin of the forum and organizer of the contest, please speak up. I would of course know who my opponents are. So if that doesn't feel right to you, please voice your concern and I will not participate.
