My stories: Claire's Cesspool of Sin
-------------------------------------------------------------
Record Chaser is the first story I ever posted and the first longer piece of fiction in general I ever wrote. I remember well how nervous I was before I published the first chapter back then. Hopefully, I will be finally able to finish the story here.

Chapter 1 - A Rude Awakening
She felt more dazed than usual when she woke up. She was by no means a morning person. Jumping out of bed immediately after opening her eyes was already out of the question on a normal day. But what she experienced on this particular day was more like waking up after being sedated. Her mind seemed to be trapped in a foggy space, unable to fully perceive her surroundings. It felt like she was observing her own consciousness trying to claw its way back to the surface of her mind.
Where was she? It was hard for her to keep her eyes open. Whatever she was able to deduce about her current location, she had to infer from blurry glances through half-open eyes. She was in a dimly lit room, maybe lit by a desk lamp or a bedside lamp on a nightstand. There also seemed to be a small green light coming from somewhere nearby.
She was not in her bedroom in her apartment, that much was clear to her. Sometimes, she slept at Emily’s or Jason’s place or in her old bedroom at her parent’s house, which they had turned into a guest room since she moved out for college three years ago. But she was pretty sure she wasn’t at either of those familiar places either. What made her think she had to be in a bedroom in the first place?
As she gave in to the temptation to close her heavy eyes again, she started to pay attention to her other senses. She didn’t hear anything. But she felt a little warm, not uncomfortably so, but enough to notice. The temperature in the room was high enough that she didn’t need the warm embrace the blanket provided.
On her back, she felt the support of a mattress while the blanket covered her entire body up to her neck. She could feel its subtle weight, its softness and warmth, from her feet up her legs, her hips, her stomach, her breasts, to her neck. It took her a moment, but then that seemingly trivial realization confused her. Was she naked? She usually went to sleep wearing shorts and a cozy shirt, so she wouldn’t normally feel the direct contact of the blanket with most of her upper body. She considered looking down at herself to check, but she was so tired… It could wait a few more minutes.
She was about to doze off again when she heard a sound. The sound of a door opening. Her eyes flickered open and she saw a figure entering the room. She tried to focus, her dazed mind and slowly improving vision struggling to make sense of what she saw. She was able to make out a man dressed in… white? A doctor maybe? She tried to speak.
“Am I… in a hospital?”
Her words were incomprehensible to the man, but they caught his attention nevertheless. He started talking while closing the door behind him.
“Oh, thank God! You’re finally awake! Man, I was starting to worry. I was expecting you to wake up much sooner. I’ve been waiting for an hour. Of course you have to wake up exactly when I step out of the room to take a leak. Just my luck.”
He seemed genuinely happy to see her awake. She had no idea who he was, but assuming he was her doctor and hearing how concerned he sounded, she felt a little guilty that she had made him worry. Of course, it wasn’t her fault that she didn’t wake up sooner… or was it? For a moment, she tried to recall her last memory before waking up here but quickly gave up. Anyway, she simply didn’t want others to worry about her unnecessarily.
“...sorry…”
She tried to apologize, but only managed to mumble a dejected ‘sorry’. This time, the man understood what she was trying to say. He walked past her as he kept talking to her.
“Don’t be. It’s not your fault. If anything, it’s my fault. It was probably an overdose for a petite girl like you. Let me get you something to drink, you must be thirsty.”
An overdose? Now things started to make sense. She must have been in an accident or something like that, and the anesthesiologist went a little overboard with the sedatives.
She didn’t like being called a petite girl. She was a grown woman after all. But she couldn’t deny that she was literally a bit of a lightweight. Whatever they had given her, it probably didn’t take a high dose to knock her out.
He was also right that she was thirsty. She hadn’t paid it any attention so far, but now that he mentioned it, her throat was very dry. She heard the sound of water being poured into a glass. A moment later he came back into view with a glass of water in hand.
“Here.”
He spoke the single word in a comforting tone. Holding the glass in his right hand, he leaned slightly over her body. He put his left hand gently behind her head, supporting her as he slowly pushed her head into an upright position, and then moved the glass to her lips.
“Just small and slow sips for now. You’re still pretty hazy. We don’t want you to choke because the water went down the wrong pipe.”
He was patient as he helped her drink. Feeling the water in her dry mouth, she realized how much she needed that. She was slowly becoming more and more conscious anyway, but the water had an invigorating effect on her mind. With her thoughts beginning to clear, she noticed that the way he held her head was weirdly intimate for a doctor.
“Thanks.”
She said in a soft voice after she finished drinking. He simply nodded as he moved a few steps away to put the glass on a nearby table.
Now that she felt more awake and her presumed doctor had come closer, she took another, more inquisitive look at him. She noticed something out of place that didn’t scare her yet, but made her feel uneasy. Yes, he was dressed in white and a few minutes ago her hazy mind and blurry vision had led her to the conclusion that what she saw must have been a doctor’s white coat. But now, she saw clearly that he was wearing a white bathrobe. That… didn’t make any sense. She was about to say something when he spoke again.
“Oh, by the way, I turned up the temperature a little above what I’m usually comfortable with. From my experience, women get cold more easily than men and I didn’t want you to feel cold when you woke up. But now that you’re awake, would you mind if we dialed down the temperature a bit?”
There it was again. That genuine sounding concern. At first, it had made her trust him, but now it started to unnerve her.
“Where am I? And… and who are you?”
She spoke louder now, stronger. But the quiver in her voice betrayed her nervousness. In that sense, it was weaker than before.
Despite her growing nervousness, her body, for whatever reason, chose this moment of impending panic to send her the signal that… her nose was itching. She paid the sensation little mind and intuitively moved her left hand to her face to scratch her nose. She never would have become conscious of this trivial, everyday motion if it didn’t turn out to be impossible.
She had barely moved her left hand, or the right for that matter, when her wrists began to strain against the cuffs that held her arms in place. The unease she had started to feel after realizing that the man wasn’t wearing a white doctor’s coat finally turned into a full-blown panic. She mustered all her strength to fight against the cuffs restraining her wrists. Soon she noticed that her ankles were bound in a similar fashion, forcing her to lie down on the bed with her legs spread.
The cuffs allowed her to sit upright on the bed. As she started to desperately move around, the blanket that had covered most of her body now slipped down to her waist, revealing her bare breasts. She was indeed naked, at least from the waist up. She was in shock. Her eyes were rapidly moving back and forth between her naked body, the cuffs chaining her to the bed, and the man calmly observing her frantic struggle.
“Look at me.”
The words the man uttered were neither a loud yell nor a quiet command. They were an offer, something to focus on so that she might calm down. To her own surprise, it worked. She was still breathing rapidly through her open mouth. Her bare chest was on full display. But in this moment, neither of them seemed to care. His eyes were firmly locked on her face. Whatever fatigue still lingered in her body was now washed away by adrenaline.
“I get that you are confused and frightened. I can’t promise you that you’ll be less frightened in a moment, but I think we can do something about your confusion. Should I start with the questions you just asked?”
His calm and patient demeanor was irritating and reassuring at the same time. Irritating because it seemed so out of place, and reassuring because it made her believe in the possibility that she might be able to reason with him.
She calmed down a bit. All her senses were still on high alert, but she felt her breathing slow down. She registered the pain that her own nails had inflicted on her hands when she unconsciously clenched them into tight fists, digging her nails into her palms.
As she relaxed, she became self-conscious about her exposed chest. But this wasn’t the time to care about nudity. This was a matter of life and death. Who was this man? A serial killer? A slave trader? Did he kidnap her for ransom? Would she survive this encounter? She couldn’t figure this out on her own. She met his gaze, then gave him a quiet nod, signaling that she wanted the answers he offered. He nodded back at her.
“Okay, good. Let me start with the easier of your two questions. Where are you? You are in a bedroom in the basement of a building. Frankly, you don’t need to know more than that. I rented this place under a false name and I’ll most likely never come back here after tomorrow. So knowing the exact address won’t help you or the police find me, if that’s why you’re asking. However, you’re not that far from your apartment. So once we’re done here, you can walk home. Your phone is in the drawer over there and I’ll return it to you before you leave. If you’re not familiar with this particular part of the city, you can then use the navigation app of your choice to find your way home. And if your phone needs recharging, just let me know.”
He sounded so casual and considerate while explaining these things. Like they were friends and he just described to her how to find her way to his new address after he had moved to a new place. It was surreal. But she also felt a wave of relief calm her anxious mind. He had said: ‘So once we’re done here, you can walk home’. The implication being, first, that she’d survive, and second, that she’d be in a state where she was able to walk. Assuming he was telling the truth, that was good news all things considered.
Now that she was fully awake, she started to strategize. Of course, she had no good reason to believe anything he said, but without any hope to cling to, she was sure she would lose her mind. And without being able to think clearly, she would never find a way to get out of this.
Take him at his word, try not to offend him, and see whether there is a way to reason with him. She didn’t have a lot of time to think about her situation, but for now, that appeared to be her best course of action. She couldn’t tell whether he had any idea what she was thinking about. Either way, he proceeded with the next question.
“Now, your second question, that one is a bit trickier. Who am I? In most cases, people want to know your name when asking that question, but I guess that is not what you’re interested in. However, if my name is what you want to know, then, for obvious reasons, I can’t reveal my full name to you. But I think we can do this on a first name basis. Anyway, to get back to your original question... Hmm, you’re into philosophy, aren’t you? I like that...”
Oh god, she started to think she knew his type. The kind of guy that likes to hear himself talk. She just hoped he would not go on forever rambling about the intricate complexities of the question ‘Who are you?’ Anyway, she wasn’t going to interrupt him. Despite his composed demeanor, she still feared what would happen if she angered him in any way. Her mind wandered for a moment, but then she focused on his babbling again.
“…So you see, there’s a million different answers to the question of who I am, most of them completely irrelevant to your current predicament. I’m not someone you know, if that’s what you’re trying to figure out. For all I know, we’ve never interacted before today. But if I go with what’s relevant for you, the best answer to the question, I guess, is…”
He appeared to be deep in thought as he paused for a moment, his gaze wandering to the ceiling, his arms folded before his chest. Seeing him think made her anxious. Then he looked at her again, and for a brief moment, as he seemed to have an epiphany, a joyous smile spread across his face.
“Well, let me put it like this. I know your name is Claire. It’s very nice to finally meet you and talk to you like this. As I said before, I can’t tell you my full name, but I hope my first name is enough for you. And as for who I am…”
Sheepishly scratching his head as he paused briefly before finishing the sentence made him almost look like a shy boy about to confess to a girl he likes. He then looked directly into her eyes.
“I’m Mark and… I’m your rapist for the coming day.”
