Poetry

The Dining Hall is the perfect place to take a break from your studies. Meet your fellow students or colleagues to chat about anything else the world has to offer. For the most part, any interest you want to share is fair game—just steer clear of contemporary politics.

Poetry

Poetry is yet another art I utterly fail at -- you can study prosody, the metrical feet etc. all your life and not become a good poet. Or you can pretty much start writing poems in the second language in earnest in your thirties and make it all the way to the Nobel Prize -- I bet Brodsky wouldn't have gone to Stockholm if he remained a Russian-only author.

Oh well, it's not about recognition, even if it's the only rating that counts here, much like with painting. The impact of great verse upon the soul is truly profound, and good bawdy poems are great fun. And there's the whole business of joining the forces with music and becoming a song.

Have you ever tried to write poetry come up with a poem you are proud of? Do you like to read poetry, whether it's Homer or Carol Ann Duffy? :)

I wrote poems years ago and posted them all on the official Linkin Park forums. Probably on the Good Charlotte message board too. Never saved them beyond that. There were a few that had really good lines (or at least I thought so at the time,) it's a shame I can't remember them.

Well, I do have my Ode to Interplanetary Poontang right here on RA. I'm very proud of it and wish I'd thought of it back when I had to write poems for English class, though it's not a sonnet. I think the last time I wrote a limerick for an assignment was sixth grade, so maybe it's just as well I didn't.

Speaking of sonnets, if you can remember a simple rhyming structure and write some iambic pentameter, a sonnet is a great way to get a girl's attention. It doesn't have to be Shakespeare. Just throw in some allusions to hearts, sunshine, and roses and run with it.
