Skuttrusk at the beginning of the contest there is going to be match ups created, you will be informed what your pen name and the prompt for your story. My understanding is that @claire was accepting participants till 7/6 before making the bracket.

My schedule is a bit tight over the next few weeks, so I decided not to participate. If there's an odd number at the end (e.g., 15) and someone else is needed, I'd be there.

But here's a quick idea, if it doesn't quite work out: you could also have a group round instead of 1-on-1 matches. For example, with 18 participants, you could have 6 three-way matches, and then let the two second-place teams with the highest points advance to the quarterfinals.

Die Idee mit Gruppenrunden finde ich top! Denn wenn man Pech hat, schreibt man eine wirklich gute Geschichte und trifft dann aufgerechnet in der Auftaktrunde auf den späteren Sieger.
Bei 18 Teilnehmern jeweils die ersten beiden Geschichten mit den meisten Stimmen weiterkommen zu lassen, wäre jedenfalls eine faire Chance. Auch wenn der Wettbewerb dann vielleicht die eine oder andere Runde zusätzlich benötigt. Aber wir sind ja nicht bei der Fußball-WM, wo feste Zeitpläne wichtig sind. Was hindert uns daran, den Wettbewerb in diesem Falle einfach ein wenig länger auszudehnen? In der Zwischenzeit gibt es dann bestimmt auch wieder einige neue Mitglieder, was der Sache ja auch gut tun würde.

If we get an odd number on some level I would certainly agree that we can make one of the matches have 3 members rather than not having a game at all for one random contestant.

We can do that on each level until we get to the final that can have 2 or 3 contestants in it

14 gives us 7 pairs and winners who then can be divided into two pairs and one triplet to give us three winners who can go into the final
