As Claire said, the transition was a sudden "things were absolutely normal" then they just...weren't. It was a surprise to me that grabbed my attention, which is what I think was the intended effect.

The sudden transition is great because it sparks interest for the reader to keep on going, but there's also context that's missing. However, the story around the transition was good enough and hot enough that even though it was jarring, it didn't kill the story and added an extra layer of spice to it.

@skuttrusk and @Shocker--I only watched the clips of Compliance, but man, that was intense. I also watched a video about the real events, and I was surprised to learn that the movie actually downplayed what really happened. When I was watching the clips, I assumed they exaggerated in the film.

I'm glad it worked out for you, but thanks for confirming it was jarring. I'll definitely have to revisit that. I think it was a case where I knew what my characters were thinking/feeling, so I didn't notice.
