Shocker wrote: Sun Jul 13, 2025 1:53 pm Hello Histbuff well, done though the story plays to your strengths so it can happen that I’m reminded of Christmas in the Rhineland. It was a thoroughly enjoyable read, but I did like your Boxer story a bit better.

Again respect for putting out not only one but two stories in a language that’s not your own.
Thanks, Shocker! I didn't think about "Christmas in Rhineland" since "die Festung" is set 25 years later, but there are similarities, such as the rapes happening inside a mansion and the Italian element. I too like "die Boxer" a bit better --- there are more dialogs in "die Boxer" and this makes the story more alive, although in both stories, someone gets buried with roses on a cross!

Looking at yours and quite a few other merit counts from this contest, the popular stories section will see a lot of new additions soon.

Good to know it! My German is rudimentary, but it's sufficient to understand that the story is very good. I'm attracted to old Breslau as a setting for all kinds of nefariousness -- must be the influence of Marek Krajewski.

I'll have to read his novels in English or German translation since my Polish is zilch. I had no idea one of his novels is entitled Fortress Breslau (Festung Breslau). The Baroness and Otto are fictitious, but the singer Caterina Valente was actually there.

Very dark stuff, I'd say.

Imagine putting out in 1998 an excellent novel about Scottish schoolgirls... entitled The Sopranos. No wonder the novel was re-issued as Our Ladies. :)
