I've always been thrilled by the stories where we see 'the beauty of the universe so peaceful and serene in seconds turn to violence and screams' (Spooks; still think Ming-Xia should've had a much better career!) The description of the shift in the atmosphere preceding the violations was very important for me.

I've been in Cologne, and I think, as @Claire said, that it helps with immersion. A sense of time and place is what I desire as well when I read stories.
