Claire wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 5:15 pm I love that complete turnaround. Overall, this story serves quite well as the beginning to a larger tale of Lasciel's exploits. I enjoy her vibe. I could see some story about her in the middle ages, then maybe tell us a bit about what she's doing in the Netherlands. I think this is a world that deserves some more exploration. And narratively, I could see something interesting come out of her meeting someone who is her equal. But for the introduction oh her character, this display of power was perfect.
Glad you liked it, I have no real intention to revisit her anytime soon. So if you want to explore more ideas with Lasciel feel free. Just be aware that I ripped that name and idea of a creation by Jim Butcher. Who himself likely stole it from legends, something he does excellently.

@Shocker It's kind of you to give me permission to borrow the character, but I am not sure I'd be good at writing for an already established character from another author's work. I would try so hard to honor the original intent and lore behind the character, such that whatever I would come up with would turn out to be terribly boring, I believe.

Really enjoyed this one. I love how the witch was essentially the heroine of the show. And how the underground inquisition felt very rooted in history, all the techniques and intended torture devices and methods all felt authentic. I liked the characters too, especially their real world prejudices and jealousies giving them (Marie especially) personal motivations. All felt real and believable (accepting the existence of magic of course). This could easily by the genesis of an ongoing series or serial, either following the Witch or the inquisition members (if any survive) or just separate scenarios in the same universe.
Thank you for sharing your talent.

thank you for your kind words, I had a lot of fun writing this. I feel prejudices make for great story hooks and allow me to twist the story.

'...and the next thing you know, you have the Holy Catholic Church.' And then there's Lasciel having her way with the Holy Catholic Church. An excellent story, I like how it started with Father di Giacomo as the protagonist and ended with him reduced to playing a bit part, underscoring his loss of power and agency.

Can't help but think that Marie's trauma may well overcome her conditioning, and the nun will burn them all... along with herself.

When I re-edited this story, I was a bit shocked to find how clearly I had implied the death of them all. Snuff is not my cup of tea, but at the tine it felt a proper end for the story. And I still think so.

As for the church, like any organization, it has its fair share of twisted and bigoted persons, witch hunts in the middle ages had very little to do with the search for witches, and very much with power. I had constructed the whole story around on sentence “the most dangerous thing about searching gor a witch, is actually catching one”. The rest more or less just naturally flew from that in both directions.
