The Lure of Alternate History

Again, as a reader with little writing talent. I find it easier to get into a story if I can already visualize the setting. Ie: Fun daydream is my showing up at the Alamo with a reinforced platoon of modern US Marines. The alternative history technique, in my opinion works best in a, "the history books didn't mention ......" sort of way.
