On this day in history

The Dining Hall is the perfect place to take a break from your studies. Meet your fellow students or colleagues to chat about anything else the world has to offer. For the most part, any interest you want to share is fair game—just steer clear of contemporary politics.

One hundred years ago today, on 7 April 1926, the Irish aristocrat Violet Gibson tried to change the history of our world when she took a shot at Benito Mussolini, the bullet grazing his nose.

Her reward? Thirty years of insane asylums.

One hundred years ago today, on 21 April 1926, the most famous accident of birth in recent world history took place in London.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary's existence, as long as it was gilded, spanned a lot of things and lives... Still and all -- outlasted by Liz Truss. :|

I wonder sometimes if all the carnage of WW1 was really destined to happen, or if one maniac somehow had not done what he did we might very well be living in a world that would not have suffered a century where the murdered are in the countless millions. Remember well being unable to put down Barbara Tuchman's "Guns Of August" and reading how the path to such slaughter just seemed to develop inexorably after the assassination.

Ninety years ago today, on 18 July 1936, yet another military coup attempt shook Spain. Back in the day it was almost a regular event; this one was different, though -- it took almost three years and a civil war to succeed.

On a Canary Islands airstrip, Captain Bebb's plane was waiting to carry General Franco to Spanish Morocco -- and into history books.
